I, R. Bharathiraja, is currently working at the State Training Centre, Puducherry where I am doing non-teaching work. So, with the permission of the CCSL course coordinator, i made a visit to Govt. Primary School, Veerampattinam, Puducherry and did my field work there.

Students were actively participated in the story telling activity. They narrated stories of their own and stories they heard from their friends, parents, grand parents and relatives.

Public Library visit

Students were taken to the nearby branch public library. Students explored the library and interacted with the branch librarian. They read books and children magazines at the library.

Creative writing

Children wrote stories on the basis of the pictures of objects and characters given to them. They came up with novel stories with fine imagination.

Newspaper cutting activity

A Newspaper cutting was handed over to each student. Students read the news in the given Newspaper cutting. After reading, students expressed their reading in their own words. Teacher raised questions from the Newspaper cutting. Teacher appreciated the students for their correct reply.

Reading hour

There are two library periods every week. knowledge is not confined to reading textbooks only. Students knowledge horizon extends on reading a wide range of contents on their own. Reading becomes joyful and purposeful only on reading books of their own choice with the librarian’s guidance. Reading session was conducted in the school. Students were showed interest in reading books. They have been reading both Tamil and English books. Normally they prefer story books to read that too with colourful pictures.

Reading Corner:

Reading Corner was installed a few years before in the school but that was not functional during the visit of the field visitor. The field visitor with the permission of the Headmaster involved in setting right of the Reading Corner with books. Thereafter, students started to read the books kept in the reading corner. The field visitor told the students how to take and keep the books in the shelves of the reading corner.

Students have chosen their favourite books and written insightful book reviews. A sample is shared here for perusal. This activity threw a message that if students are properly trained and their interests are rightly addressed, they will excel in their desirable activities.

Most memorable during the field visit was Creative writing Activity.

Fifth Standard Student Anish had written a excellent story in neat and legible handwriting without any mistake and correction. I wonder how a class 5 students writes a meaningful novel story on the basis of given pictures of few characters.

I realized the real potential of students are unknown until appropriate tasks are given to them.

The Company

There is one famous conversion,

" Which is more important", asked the big Panda, " the journey or the destination"

"The Company" said the dragon.

Most valuable intake from the course is the company I got from the course. The course coordinator, resource persons and the fellow CCSL students are the treasure i earned in this course. The journey with them during the course will last for ever in my heart. I hope this journey will continue with beloved course coordinator, resource person and friends in coming years too.

Myself as Teacher Librarian

Under the guidance of resource persons and suggestions from friends, i believe that I will render my duty as teacher librarian in an exemplary manner.
The skills and knowledge gained from the course is helping in all aspects to organize and maintain the library.
Mainly, students, school and community are the real beneficiaries by having a well-motivated and well trained teacher librarian in the school.

Difficulties faced

Actually no difficulties were faced during the course or at the school. In the future also, if difficulties arise, I will find the means to solve the difficulties with the gained skills and knowledge & continued guidance from Team CCSL and my school HM and staff’s cooperation.

This course is a well-structured course. The resource persons are the best in the field. The course coordinator conducted the course in an effective manner.

It is a six month online course with two face to face contact programmes one in the starting and another in during the ending of the course.Students were engaged with online sessions covering various topics in between the two face to face personal contact programs. But, it gave the feel of a regular course, the reason is the knowledge and skills learnt from the course is on par with the regular course.

I am now able to function as a school librarian with all required vision, knowledge and skills. Motivational and attitude are the key factors of continued success. This course has given this motivation and attitude change.

I hereby affirm that I will take all the learning of the course to reflect in my school library throughout my service period.
