This article has information on the effects of hearing and its link to deciphering emotion. Being able to pick up on the different tones or pitches of a person’s conversation is as important as seeing the emotions on the face. It helps with social interactions by knowing when and how to approach someone. One can choose to avoid situations that may negatively effect them. For example, hearing an argument between two people, in close proximity, escalating to screaming and yelling, would prompt a listener to exit the area to avoid any possible physical confrontation by being too close.

This article by Jerker Rönnberg talks about hearing and cognition. Are we hearing what was said to us correctly? Maybe the better question is: are we comprehending or encoding the message correctly? Sometimes we can miss out on verbal cues due to “adverse listening conditions.” Meaning, too many conversations going on at one time, other things occupying the mind, or hearing disabilities. This can have an effect on an individual’s emotions and their perception of another’s.
