Van Gogh painted this in 1888 in imitation of what he saw that night. This oil painting is an exaggeration of an actual cafe in Arles, France, and its surroundings. Although the painting does not portray the exact surroundings of the place, there is a beauty to its exaggerations. There is a use of bright colors such as yellow, orange, green and blue. This painting is where Van Gogh first debuted his style of painting the sky at night with exaggeration, making it blue with unrealistic stars. He uses the same style in paintings that followed after, “Starry Night Over the Rhone” and “The Starry Night”. I chose this fine art because more than its quality of being aesthetically pleasing, I personally can reflect on the painting. In the painting is a cafe at night with what seems to be people drinking and eating all under a blue starry night sky. The yellow lanterns light up the area as it gives the painting a warm yellow-orange vibe. I imagine myself being in the painting. I imagine myself sitting in that cafe with yellow-orange luminous light while eating a dessert perhaps under a blue, dreamy, starry night sky. I imagine how would it feel to share all that with someone I love. It may seem too romantic, but it is but a dream that one day I can experience it too.
