Concept of Sawm based on Surah Al-Baqarah verses 183-187

A divine prescription meant to cultivate taqwa (God-consciousness). It is a spiritual discipline that was also prescribed to earlier communities, highlighting its universal role in moral development. Fasting is required during the month of Ramadan, which is honored as the time when the Quran was revealed, offering guidance, clear proofs, and a criterion between right and wrong. The verses emphasize the balance between spiritual striving and ease, allowing exemptions for the sick and travelers, with opportunities to make up missed fasts. It also reaffirms that Allah desires ease, not hardship. The verses conclude by addressing personal conduct during fasting, affirming the permissibility of intimacy at night and encouraging sincere dua (supplication), reminding believers that Allah is near and responsive to those who call on Him.

Virtues found in Sawm (Fasting)

Sabr (Patience)

Virtue: Fasting trains the soul in self-restraint, endurance, and patience — abstaining from food, drink, and desires for the sake of Allah.

Proof – Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183:

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you that you may attain taqwā (God-consciousness).”
﴾لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ﴿

Explanation:
The development of taqwā through fasting requires sabr—to control physical urges, bear hunger and thirst, and remain patient in conduct.

Rahmah (Mercy)

Virtue: Allah’s laws regarding fasting come with mercy — allowing flexibility for those who are sick or traveling and not burdening the soul beyond its capacity.

Proof – Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185:

“Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship...”
﴾يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلْعُسْرَ﴿

Explanation:
This shows Allah’s rahmah in legislating fasting with compassion, making it manageable and not oppressive.

2 lessons from these verses

Fasting as a Means to Develop Taqwā (God-consciousness)
The verses highlight that fasting is prescribed not just as a physical act of abstaining from food and drink, but as a spiritual discipline designed to increase awareness of Allah, self-control, and moral uprightness. Through patience and restraint during fasting, believers cultivate a deeper connection with Allah and strengthen their character.

Balance Between Obedience and Ease
Allah’s legislation of fasting shows His mercy and wisdom by allowing exemptions for the sick and travelers, emphasizing that He does not intend to burden believers beyond their capacity. This balance teaches that worship is meant to nurture the soul without causing undue hardship, reflecting divine compassion alongside obedience.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:197
“…And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is taqwā. So fear Me, O you of understanding.”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:200–202
“…Among them is he who says, ‘Our Lord, give us in this world,’ and he will have no share in the Hereafter. But among them is he who says, ‘Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’”

Taqwā as the Best Provision (Zād)
○ During pilgrimage, people prepare physically and financially. But Allah reminds us in ayah 197 that taqwā is the most important provision.
○ It’s not just the external journey, but the inner journey toward Allah that truly matters.

Spiritual Awareness and Control
○ Same verse (2:197) emphasizes avoiding rafath (sexual talk), fusūq (sin), and jidāl (argument). These are direct commandments that build taqwā through self-restraint.

Balanced Supplication
○ Verses 200–202 distinguish between those who focus only on worldly goals and those who seek both dunya and akhirah.
○ Pilgrimage teaches us to redirect our goals toward Allah and eternity — a fruit of taqwā.

Week 7: Virtues of ʿUmrah and Hajj Based on Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195–204)

Al-Taḍḥiyyah (Sacrifice)

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195
“And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good (muḥsinīn).”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:196
“And complete the Hajj and ʿUmrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals…”

Financial Sacrifice
○ Verse 195 encourages spending for Allah’s cause. Going for Hajj/ʿUmrah involves spending wealth sincerely (ikhlās), which is a form of taḍḥiyyah.
○ Verse 196 continues with the theme of sacrifice by commanding the offering of animals if the pilgrimage is interrupted — again highlighting physical and financial sacrifice.

Fulfilling the Pilgrimage Despite Hardship
○ Allah commands believers to “complete the Hajj and ʿUmrah for Allah,” emphasizing that even when facing difficulties (illness, travel restrictions, etc.), sacrifice should not be abandoned.

Patience and Endurance
○ Verse 196 also mentions penalties for violations (fasting, feeding the poor, or offering), encouraging self-discipline — a form of spiritual sacrifice.
