What does the terms have to do with race? The term Jim Crow was used in a disparaging or derogatory way to refer to people, mostly African Americans. Later, Jim Crow laws took the name of the character and go hand in hand with race because it was the enforcement of racial laws, activities and segregation.

Is the reference positive or negative? The reference is negative as it is intended to limited their freedom and ability to vote, at the same time dehumanize African-Americans.

What is its origin? Jim Crow laws originated during the Reconstruction period of 1865. They followed the Black Codes which had previously restricted the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans. Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

What do you think this reference might have to do with police activities? Racial profiling can be seen all around the globe today, in Ferguson, Dallas and perhaps even here in Sacramento. So, despite Jim Crow laws being overruled in 1965, it has resurfaced in a different way and is the culprit of many racial protests and riots today.
