When pushing past a breaking point, self-realization plays a more significant role. Although both are important, one can't know they need to improve if they already think they are the best. For example in Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the main character Marguerite Johnson realizes she isn't the best at school and that things are just slipping away from her. After Maya realizes this, she knows she needs to improve. Would she ever have improved without realizing this? Also what plays a big role in Maya evolving is her relationships with others. Maya makes new friends in her journey such as Louise. Louise- Mayas first real friend knew Maya for who she was and not her past so Maya felt safe around her.

Self realization vs Self image

Oh man. Heavy topic.
I believe both of these two are essential in getting over a breaking point. Self realization is to realize you have a problem or be aware of yourself while Self image is how you view yourself and having a positive self image is incredibly important. One could argue self realization is what pushes us through troubled time but I believe what gets us through in the long run is positive self image. Many depressed and suicidal people realize they have a problem but they don't have the self image and motivation to fix the problem.
