This year has thrown us some serious curve balls and rogue waves, but what I hope we have learned from all of this is that learning can happen anywhere. We can set up our dinning rooms and garages as classrooms, we can use video conferencing so our students can see us and present their ideas to us. Yes, we have had to make some quick-thinking changes to our plans and sometimes it didn't always work the way we wanted it to, but I hope you saw it as an opportunity to grow. You have spent the better part of a year changing and adapting to meet the needs of your students--this is what makes you an educator. What makes you a great educator is that you kept trying and kept seeking out better ways to reach your students and get them to the finish line.
My point here, is that we maybe in the midst of a pandemic, but we all have persevered and I want you to know that this did not go unnoticed. I know at times this profession can be demanding--from all sides--but what should keep you going is that your students depend on you and need you to reach their goals.
In short, you've got this!

This article really isn't about just high school students; it's about ALL students--even our adult students. Terada (Terada 2021) adds, "Writing about a topic also encourages students to process information at a deeper level. Answering multiple-choice or short-answer questions may help with factual recall, but putting thoughts on paper encourages students to evaluate different ideas, weighing the importance of each one and considering the order they should be presented in, Graham and his colleagues write. By doing so, students may make new connections between ideas, ones they may not have made when initially learning the information" (Terada 2021).
