To begin my argument, the faculty of FRCC should start to begin having a better understanding of student's lives inside and outside of the classroom. In today’s digital world education is almost slandered online due to more opportunity and advancements when it comes to career paths outside of the schooling system. With all of this going on more students lack the motivation they need to succeed in their continued education. Teachers can become clueless to these outside distractions as they do not understand what it's like going to school during this time. Being unmotivated can be a root source for other problems like depression and other mental health issues. Problems like these can cause a student to mishandle and fail certain situations inside of the classroom. If teachers and staff grasped a better understanding on a student's personal life, they can help them succeed before a bed situation becomes worst. Students can feel alone when it comes to the schooling process. This can lead them to not look for external resources when they are struggling and become unmotivated. The drive and passion for students in school is affected by many sources but their main concern throughout a semester is the grade book. Letting a letter grade be the master of their lives is something every student dreads throughout their semester. Understanding what kind of impact this has on students is just another way to help apart of a student's life. The grading system is an enemy of all students. Schools do not understand the influence they have on their students’ lives and most seem to see motivational struggle as a personal problem.

In a perfect world, every student and teacher would work together to achieve the main goal or purpose which is to have students succeed in the 2- or 4-year program that relates to their career choice. College can be described as a four way stop in a sense. Even though each car goes in different directions they all have to work together to make sure no one crashes. The same concept can be put into school, with each car being a different part different part a student’s educational environment. Every student and teacher need to have a better understanding that we all share a life outside of the classroom. According to an article from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “There are different theories of motivation, some focus on quantity of motivation and others on quality. Quantity of motivation could be high or low. Quality of motivation depends on whether the source of motivation is internal or external” (Kusurkar). Motivational theory is much deeper than just feelings, it all relates to outside sources curated to everyone’s different lives. The theory of a person’s motivations can be subjected into 2 categories, your intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. An article that better explains these which states, “Intrinsic motivation refers to doing something because one is inherently interested in the task or activity at hand. They are not concerned with external rewards or recognition, but rather, the drive is based upon enjoying the activity itself” (Bontempi). She describes your inner motivations to be students’ inner goals and concerns when it comes to school. The second half of their motivations come from external sources like teachers and other students or friends. Either way, being able to stay fully motivated in learning environments takes both the internal and external reward. Motivation can be given in any form. The slightest compliment or recognition from a teacher can be the difference of how a student treats a teacher and classroom. Having a better idea of each other’s lives can be the difference of understanding behaviors from students.

Moving along, the school needs to start cultivating the relationships between the student's and their instructors. Part of the outcome of a student can solely depend on the teacher’s perspective on the student and likewise. As explained before, students succeed in classes that they enjoy and can tell the teacher really cares about what they are doing. Teachers that give clear goals and instruction and a little understanding, are all a student can ask for. This will boost morale not only in the classroom but also at home. Research has shown that motivations tie directly to goals, the goals should be reachable, realistic, and achievable (Usher). The implementation of more goal setting with students would significantly increase motivational values for students. Students value a goal more when motivation is coming from other sources like teachers and staff. This can boost a teacher and student relationship as teachers should implement certain goals for students. Another way to for teachers can connect more with a student is knowing what kind of major they are deciding on. Students that come to find a higher education at places like Front Range to find a purpose and to really see if school is something they want to continue. If schools do decide to spend a little more time implementing motivation increase for students and build stronger relationships between student and teacher, this will benefit not only the student but also the whole faculty.

To continue , teachers should start to implement more motivational values in the classroom. Studies have shown motivation in general and academic performance tends to decline over time in both grade school and throughout college (Hulleman). This can show that motivational value is even more important in continued education. The more students progress through school, the more students lose motivation for it. This is valuable information as a community college should try to keep students motivated to move onto bigger schools or opportunities. This is actually vital for the school’s success rate as over 20% of students attending FRCC get themselves in a transfer program. Another piece of information found states, “Students who are more motivated to learn persist longer, produce higher quality effort, learn more deeply, and perform better in classes and on standardized tests” (Hulleman). This is just another piece of evidence that students seamlessly strive for in their educational environment when they are in a constant state of being motivated. The best work inside and outside of the classroom can all be accounted for from high motivations. Having a lack of motivation can be a very daunting and lost feeling. Teachers and staff should continue to strive towards keeping motivational success in students.

If teachers and staff just showed the slightest increase in interest of students, motivational values can change juristically. People also understand that some staff believe that they do not need to change anything, they think that the new batch of students will come and only the strong and willing will make it through their programs. Although this is the sad truth in some cases, with further increases of dropout rates and opportunities that require no degree more schools will feel the effect of not acting sooner on the problem at hand. Schools will begin to see less students applying and a decrease in graduation rates as this is a strong key to a successful school. With all of this information found a change in the system is needed and and implementing motivational values will be more beneficial for everyone involved.
