Mycenae was the first Greek city-state that began in 1600 B.C. The Mycenaeans constructed a monarchial government that was surrounded by massive stone walls. It is told that they also had a powerful army in which they later conquered Crete to make it part of their empire. They later collapsed in 1100 B.C. causing there to be a difficult period of time. This was known as the Dark Age.

This era of the Greeks was from 500 B.C. to around 338 B.C. It consisted of two wars, one with the Persians and the other was a civil war known as the Peloponnesian War. After the Greeks defeated the Persians, Athens took over. This lead to the creation of a direct democracy coming from the basics of the Athen's government. There were two separate parts to Greece which were Athens and Sparta. Both consisted of two very different governments which quite frankly despised each other. The Athenians were eventually defeated but the major cities such as Sparta and Athens were very weakened not realizing that Macedonia was a growing power which will later cause problems. Western Art has taken a large influence from Greek culture. Greek dramas were also a huge part of their culture. Macedonia later came to power when they took over Greece even though this wasn't what King Philip wanted. He wanted to merge the two kingdoms and work together. Philip died soon after and his son, Alexander, took over at the age of 20 and took over Persia.
