The students will think it is really neat that their teacher took the time to come to their own house. When you visit, you should dress in regular clothes and not discuss school material so that the parent and students know that you are genuinely trying to get to know them.
--Ashley Varnadore
Findmore info at this website:
http://www.nea.org/home/32719.htm

Traditional teachers tend to eat lunch with other teachers while their students sit at lunch tables. One of the easiest way to build relationships with students and get to know them is by casual conversation. Students will love you if you go sit at the lunch table with them and have a normal conversation that does not relate to school stuff.
--Ashley Varnadore
This article talks about why it is important:

http://www.smartclassroommanagement.com/2013/10/12/why-you-should-eat-lunch-with-your-students/

Setting expectations in your classroom is essential to managing your classroom and your students. It also helps create a relationship with the teacher. The students know what the teacher expects, and there is a better environment for everyone. Classroom expectations need to be specific and easily understood. This article gives some examples of classroom expectations: http://www.learnersedgeinc.com/blog/classroom-management-set-expectations-not-rules
-Noah Price

When the school year starts, it is important for teachers to start getting to know their students. There are a variety of activities that teachers can do with their students to start building a positive relationship. One activity is an "I Am..." activity. In this activity, the teacher has 10 questions for the students to answer to tell about themselves. Some questions could be, "I am happy when __________, I get nervous when ____________, In the future I will ______________, I love ___________." The teacher can have the students put the questions in a poem, PowerPoint, or write them out.
~Taylor Phillips

This link explains the activity more and gives examples of more relationship building activities:
http://www.edutopia.org/blog/fostering-classroom-relationships-larry-ferlazzo-katie-hull-sypnieski

Something that some teachers may not think about that can hinder student-teacher relationships are the number of times that they call on each student. Teachers should create a balance on how many times they call on each student to answer questions. If a teacher calls on one student more than the other, the student who gets called on the least could develop a low level of confidence and could end up "tuning you out" because they know that you won't call on them.
~Taylor Phillips

More information at this site:
http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/105124/chapters/Developing_Positive_Teacher-Student_Relations.aspx

This is an activity that students can work with on the first day of school. The teacher will provide each student with a paper bag on the first day filled with school supplies they may use throughout the year as a treat. Then, the students are asked o decorate the outside of their bag to represent themselves using pictures, drawings, words, etc. At the end of the day, students are to take the bags home and fill it with 3 things that represent them. The next day each student can share with the class or to partners. On day 1, the teacher should have her Me Bag ready and present about herself as a way to model the activity for students.
- Madison Diggs
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/lesson/icebreakers_for_kids.shtml

Sometimes, the most important student-teacher bonding moments do not happen at the front of the classroom. One of the best ways to get to know your students better on an individualized basis is to walk around the classroom and monitor them while they work on assigned activities. Some of the best teachers I've had took the time to sit down with us and have discussions with us about what we were doing, what interested us most, and what might have been confusing. Whatever the actual conversations are, the important thing is that communication is happening, and this communication alone can send the message to your students that you genuinely care about them.
- Richard Haley

For more information, look at #4 after clicking the link.
http://www.edweek.org/tm/articles/2012/08/07/tln_clark.html

The teacher can pull students one by one during center or morning work and just talk to them.

The teacher can create a sheet listing several categories with a line next to each one. Then students circulate and must find someone who has experienced each category. (For example, "Has been to the ocean," "Has a brother and a sister" or "Has broken a bone.") The student must ask for their classmate's name and write it on the line next to the category. The teacher could collect the sheets, choose different items to share and, depending upon the class and comfort level, ask students to share more details about a specific experience.
