The women's soccer team is one of the most successful teams in women's soccer. Even though both teams were playing the same sport, women were significantly underpaid in comparison to men's team. Mena Report stated in the article, ¨The U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) should work to correct course and close the wage gap so that the only thing women athletes are fighting for is the world title or a gold medal. The women's soccer team had filed a Federal lawsuit against the US Federation of Soccer for the reason of gender discrimination. Megan Rapinoe was a very big advocate and leader for the US Soccer team during this time. The lawsuit was filed because of the unfair and less funding, wages, and promotions for games. In this article, CNN Wire goes into depth about why the women's soccer team was fed up with the inequalities. The article states, "...the federation discriminates by paying the women less than members of the men's national team "for substantially equal work and by denying them at least equal playing, training, and travel conditions; equal promotion of their games; equal support and development for their games; and other terms and conditions of employment equal to the MNT" (CNN Wire). America is not accurately providing equality in terms of sports by gender. The USWNT is being denied basically everything that creates revenue and helps the team get better. The USWNT had filed a lawsuit in March of 2019 and this case wasn't resolved until three years later. So for those three years, the women soccer players had to fight and play for equal pay that should have been equal at the start of time. In the article published by Washington Post, it says, "The U.S. women win their second straight World Cup and fourth overall with a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in the final, spurring chants of "Equal pay! Equal pay!" from the stands during the team's victory celebration" (Washington Post). The USWNT has better records than the USMNT and that prompts more of the idea that performance doesn't matter, it is the gender of the sport. The US Soccer Federation President Carlos Cordiero, states that there is no belief that the womens team is lesser than the men's team. However, he resigns from his position after the filed case of gender discrimination. People don't want you to think there are inequalities, so they will hide the fact. Finally, in February of 2022, the women were granted equal pay with both teams receiving 24 million settlement. But the men's and women's teams are playing the same sport all over the world. In the article, author John Phelan reports that "... the US women's soccer team, their players are being paid less than the men, in some cases earning just 38 percent of their pay per game" (John Phelan). Women don't even earn 50 percent of the men's pay per game, which is unfair considering they are better in game records and play the same sport. Yet the USSF still denies the gender pay gap and now after the uproar of upset players and citizens seeing the inequality they decided to try resolving the issue.  Retired USNWT player, Abby Wambach was referenced throughout the article and her advocating how she played with the same mentality and effort as Kobe Bryant and Payton Manning, yet she don't nearly make as much as they would. The revenue of a women's soccer game was generated to be 900,000 dollars more than a men's soccer game from 2016-2018. The differential between the women's and men's earnings for 20 friend games and winning them all is significant to prove underpayment. Author Asmelash and Ries state, "$4,950: The maximum amount per game the women’s team would earn if they played 20 friendlies and won them all, according to the lawsuit, for a maximum total of $99,000¨ (Asmelash/Ries). They also found that "$13,166: The average amount per game the men’s team would earn if they played 20 friendlies and won them all, according to the lawsuit, for a total of $263,320" (Asmelash/Ries). The reports still show that the women's team was underpaid by $28,333 in 2016.
