Theme explains a message or moral behind a reading passage. What most people don't realize is that themes can be found in everyday life if you look for them.

-One strategy you can practice is allowing your child to watch their favorite movie or listen to their favorite song. Most songs and films have a deeper significance to them.

> Find a song or listen to a song your child enjoys listening to at the moment and find the lyrics online. If your child isn't enjoying anything in particular, Disney songs are available to listen from. Examples: "Part of Your World" by Jodi Benson- The theme focuses on facing your fears, doing more than what's expected, and trusting in yourself.

>Find a movie your child enjoys watching and watch it with them. Ask them the importance of certain scenarios. Again, Disney films are easy ones to pick from. Example: The movie Mulan focuses on the theme of courage, discovering yourself, and working through tough decisions.

Figurative language can increase reading comprehension because it is making comparisons so ideas can be visualized a lot easier. Figurative language includes: similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, idioms, and etc. If you scroll down you can find more information.

A well-known piece of figurative language is the simile from the movie Forest Gump, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

Sometimes children need an extra motivational factor in order to read a book. Suggest playing an audiobook, while doing an activity such as playing video games. Instead of the audio of the game playing, mute it, and have your child listen to an audiobook. A suggestion would be to chime in and ask questions, the more questions they answer correctly the longer they get to play.
