In the 1950s of London, the result of WW2's destruction was sen throughout the city buildings, damaged houses, and vacant bomb sitings. In the country-side it was where the wartime military bases were. Festival of London in May 1951 celebrated the nation’s recovery from the Second World War. This event made people looking positively and forward. It was a sign of progress to the population. Due to the increased earnings culture and especially youth culture grew a lot. It was a period of optimism. The city became very diverse because of the immigrant workers.

Attitudes towards immigration and emmigration

The UK public is more concerned by and opposed to migration than public's in Europe and North America. As London is the capital of the nation it receives the hugest waves of immigrants. Postwar immigration (in the 1950's) also attracted, for the first time, large numbers of workers and their families from outside Europe. This would breed resentment and antagonism between the residents of London and the migrants. There was, and still is, a minority of hardcore racists, with policies based on the idea of 'keeping Britain white' and banning all immigration. Immigrants faced various degrees of hostility and racial prejudice in postwar Britain.
