The South's goal was to drive the Union out of Atlanta.
Sherman's March to Sea: The goal was to scare Georgia's population into abandoning the case of the confederacy. If Sherman destroyed the south's factories, railroads, and farms he believed the confederacy would collapse.
Appomattox: The goal was to capture the supplies at appomattox station. The north obtained troops and trapped confederate reinforcements

Important Battles / Major Movements of each Battle

Battle of Petersburg: Part 1 - General Butler sent his men (the Union) to the east of Petersburg and to enter from the south of the Jerusalem Plank Road. Then he withdrew his men and went towards Petersburg because he encounter Home Guards. Part 2 - The Union headed towards Petersburg in order to cut off the Confederates communication and supplies from the capital, Richmond. To do this the Union crossed the Cold Harbor and the Appomattox River. Then they went back to Harrison Creek, to Howlett Line (Bermuda Hundred), and to Petersburg.

Battle of Atlanta: General Hood ordered General Hardee's men to march towards the Union left flank, which was east of the city. General Hood came up with a plan to attack General McPherson from two different directions. This attack happened by General Hardee closing in from the south and General Cheatham closing in from the west. The Union left after this attack. After General McPherson's death the Union was left in a struggle, but they stood strong.

Sherman's March to Sea: Taking over Atlanta was a major movement because it was a hub to resources for the South. When they were marching, they only burnt houses of those people who attacked them. They did not want to harm people, they just wanted to scare the people. Also it made the South very scared. When they reached Charleston, they were expecting 10k troops to defend it, the South fled before the North got there.

Appomattox: I think a major movement was the Confederacy waiting till dawn to move. If they had moved sooner the Union would not have trapped them on three sides and would have escaped.
