Olives in religion


Some of the world's most widely followed religions place great significance on olives and olive trees. Even so, the use of olive oil in religious rituals has its origins in pagan ceremonies. Priests in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome used olive oil in their sacrifices and offering to the gods.


Olive oil — along with bread, wine and water — is one of the four most important symbols in Christianity. References to olive oil are almost as old as the religion itself, with God telling Moses that olive oil is a holy anointing oil (Exodus, 30:22-33). This tradition of anointing with oil has continued throughout history by leaders of churches and nations.

The olive tree also came to symbolize peace and God's reconciliation with man. A dove brought an olive branch back to Noah as a sign that the flood was over. Jesus was praying in the Garden of Olives, or Gethsemani, when he was taken prisoner. In Hebrew, "gethsemani" means "olive press." Early Christians decorated their tombs with olive branches as a sign of the victory of life over death.


The Quran and hadith mention the olive and the olive tree numerous times. Islam considers the olive a blessed fruit and a health food that is a good source of nutrition. A parable refers to Allah, olive oil and light (Surah al-Noor 24:35). Another reference speaks to olives and nutrition (Surah al-Anaam, 6:141). The hadith refers to the olive tree as "blessed" (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 1775).

The tree of life is found in Central Asian Turkish mythology. Its elements symbolize the “rebirth, growth and development of the Turkic peoples.” It is also to be found in shamanism, in which the tree provides a ladder for the shamans to use, ascending and descending between the spirit world and the underworld. The wood of the sacred tree is what is said to be what was used to form the shaman’s drum, an integral part of the materials used in performances of rituals and sacred rites. The beech tree seems to have been the tree that was worshipped right up to recent times. Sacrifices would even be made to it, according to Abdülkadir İnan in his book on shamanism.

In the 17th century, Ottoman travel writer Evliya Çelebi talks about the various beliefs of the peoples living in the northern Caucasus region. He notes that once a year the people would gather and light candles around the tree and perform a rite. This tree grew from a piece of the Tuba tree and had been sent to Alexander from God by means of the angel Gabriel. In particular Çelebi identified the Nogay tribe as perpetuating this custom, even though they had become Muslims.

Such a shamanistic practice as tree worship makes the legendary dream of Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman dynasty even more interesting. Osman had a dream in which he saw the famous Ahi Şeyh Edebali so he went to the şeyh and explained how he had seen him in his dream. “’A moon appeared in your breast. It rose, rose and then descended into my breast. From my navel there sprang a tree. It grew and branched out so much, that the shadow of its branches covered the whole world. What does my dream mean?’

“After a brief silence, Edebali interpreted:

“’Congratulations, Osman! God Almighty bestowed sovereignty upon you and your generation. My daughter will be your wife, and the whole world will be under the protection of your children.’”
One suspects that Ahi Şeyh Edebali knew about the world tree or tree of life.
Certainly the tree of life continued as a motif because of its deep religious significance. In “Turkish Flat Weaves,” the authors point to Yörük and Turkmen nomads who use the tree to represent the axis of the world in their kilim designs. The kilims from the Thracian area, sometimes known as Şarköy kilims, have this motif as their center decoration. The authors also note that the tree of life is often found in prayer kilims, as well as in border meanders.

Just a side note. If you’ve ever looked at the Turkish five-kuruş coin issued in 2009, you’ll see a stylized tree of life on the obverse side.

Olives are the gift from heaven (Jannah) to mankind. Apart from the Date fruit, olives are also considered of utmost importance in Islam. Olive and its tree has been mentioned a number of times both in the Quran and hadith. Olive is considered a “blessed” fruit in Islam and apart from it being a good source of nutrition, it is also used as a health food and has its usage in “ruqyah  treatment'

Olives in Holy Quran
Olives have been mentioned seven times in the Qur’an. This indicates the worth it holds. One of the mentions was in the following ayat:

“And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.” [Surah Anaam:141]

The olive tree, one of the blessings of the plant kingdom, not only has nutritional, medicinal and cosmetic value; it also fulfils a religious function as a sign (ayah) of Allah(SWT).

He causes to grow for you thereby the crops, olives, palm trees, grapevines, and from all the fruits. Indeed, in that is a sign for people who give thought. (Surah Nahl:11).

Olives in Hadith ( Prophet's Sayings)
There is great significance of olives and its oil in Hadith. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“Eat olive oil and use it on your hair and skin, for it comes from a blessed tree.” (al-Tirmidhi, 1775)
Health benefits of olives have been propounded in Prophetic medicine. The Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said:

“Take oil of olive and massage with it – it is a blessed tree.” (Darimi, 69:103).
 

Another verse highlights the luminescent property of olive oil, powerfully illustrated in the Noble Qur’an:

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a   blessed  olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. (Surah Nur: 35).

Previously they also used to hand olive branches from their balconies or from the headboards of their beds, as a religious symbol.

Olive oil has been very present in the sacraments and the Christian service since the origins of this religion until today. Three different types of sacred oils are prepared with olive oil: the oil of the sick, the oil of the catechumens and the holy chrism (myrrh). As stated in the Bible, only virgin olive oil was the appropriate material to prepare the sacred ointment.

The first of the blessed oils, the oil of the sick, is destined to the sacrament of anointing the sick or Extreme Unction. In this sacrament, olive oil is understood to be medicine that will comfort and strengthen the sick. Ultimately it symbolizes the final healing that will come with the resurrection.

 Equally, olive oil signified the curing of diseases. This use of sacred oil as a sanitary element was found in the age of the Christian Catacombs. This oil was burnt in tombs and was considered as a relic by the pilgrims who on arriving would collect it in small ampoules.
