The poster design was influenced by traditional Chinese culture. For example, we used the color red, as it represents joy and luck. We then included a paragraph, emphasizing the recent COVID-19 events. We then hand drew the words “Equality” and “Unite’ to take a stand against anti-Asian hate. We wanted to make the poster as pretty as possible to please the viewer.

For our project, we made a collage to showcase the diversity and strength of Asian Americans. Our sentences translate to "Hate is a virus," "Fight the virus, not the people," "We will not keep silent," "Stop Asian hate," "Proud to be Asian," "I am Asian American," and "This is our home too." We hope this collage inspires and empowers.

不管人们说什么语言，我们觉得艺术可以对所有人说话。艺术比墙强。还有，艺术比讨厌强。我们觉得中国书法在文化中扮演着重要的角色。我觉得它向中国公民致敬。我们希望这门艺术有影响。无论你是老师，学生，父母，等等，这门艺术是非常重要。

We decided to create a visual piece for this project, with its main purpose being to pay homage to the victims of the Asian hate crimes in the U.S. We did prior research on the hate crime incidents that made it to mainstream media, and we decided to take the victims from the Atlanta spa shooting and incorporate them into the “filling” of the Chinese characters, “Peace and Love” or “和平和爱”. We believed that filling them into the characters would honor their names and their legacy. Oftentimes, names of victims are lost, and are drowned out by a consistent flow of news reportings of homicides, attacks, threats, and etc., thus, we wanted to combine the art of Chinese calligraphy and modern art to honor the people.

Our project consists of a poem that represents Chinese unity and equality in the world. The poem is read from right to left, which is consistent with how traditional Chinese poetry is read. Every line is represented by a different color on the rainbow, as we made a comparison that people and colors are the same. While we each have our own individual differences, we are the strongest when we stand together side by side, like a rainbow. This serves as a reminder to Chinese people that unity is important especially in times of Asian discrimination. We depicted the concept of Asian discrimination in the line “但在狂风暴雨中“ and through that we wanted to say that at the end of a storm, there is always a rainbow. Therefore, not only does our poem symbolize hope for the Chinese community, but also ignites a sense of unity in times of turmoil. Lastly, we decided to depict our poem as feathers on a peacock because peacocks are representative of beauty and dignity in Chinese culture. Because of that, we wanted to represent how these values are representative of the Chinese community in a more aesthetic way.

我们写的这首诗是为了提醒中国人团结和平等的重要性。我们除了想给中国人一些勇气外，我们还想说每个人都不一样。但是在狂风暴雨中，人们应该团结站在一起，才有打败狂风暴雨的可能。

For our project, we decided to interview Luke's girlfriend and her family's experiences living in Boston. We also created a poem reflective of the answers we received, which is written at the beginning. The interview details aspects of life in America and other countries, Asian culture, life in Boston, and reflections on Asian heritage.

Our project was a picture we took at Chinatown in Boston. We did research regarding the Asian hate crimes, and some statistics regarding it. We also explained the recent upsurge in Asian hate crimes and some of its causes. We then reflected the impressive amount of perseverance China stores, restraints, and families have to do in various places in the US, such as Boston's Chinatown. Finally, we reflected upon what we learned and our thoughts on it.

For our project we visited the beach and Chinatown with our friends to take pictures. The intention was to show how even though we may look different, when we're together we form a beautiful picture filled with love and joy. The surge of Asian hate crimes unfortunately shows how some people only see differences as something wrong. Our caption presents our thoughts that we are all a petal, and although we are different colored petals, we are still petals. When we're together we can create a whole flower. A field of flowers can be formed if we stop trying to separate ourselves, leaving only petals on the ground. These petals that are no longer on a flower and plucked from the ground will wilt quickly.

This picture was taken by me. I think this would be the best as a poster, not social media because it’s a little bit “violent”. The audience of this picture would be every Asian who struggles to find their own voice or have experience discrimination before but not dare to speak up. This picture conveys the idea of keeping silent even though Asian community is receiving discrimination. In the picture, the injuries symbolize the threat/violence/hate that the Asian community is receiving. The tape covering the mouth indicates that Asian rights are still not perceived since the racism still goes on and not everyone acknowledges it. It also means in some circumstances, Asians, especially immigrants, feel like they have no voice and the feel of belongingness in the states so they just don’t speak up their opinion. I don’t want to include too many words in the picture because I believe this picture can convey enough meaning and messages as “a picture is worth a thousand words.”

Meaning/Purpose: We chose this because we’ve noticed that covid has negatively influenced the way the public has viewed Asian Americans, viewing them as walking plagues rather than living beings. We want to show that Asian Americans, and more specifically Chinese Americans, should not be antagonized for covid simply due to their appearance and ethnicity. In the picture, the people in the back represent the increasing looks and judgments received by Asian Americans since the start of the pandemic. We did not go into detail about their facial features or any specifications because we wanted to emphasize that these attackers are not exclusive to one specific group of people, but rather the world as a whole. However, the hands that are being offered to the woman suggest that amidst the hate, there are still many that offer support to the Asian American community. To reinforce our point, we included a short Chinese saying in the center which means people cannot be judged by their appearance. We also made the choices to include certain cultural aspects such as Chinese Hanfu clothing and calligraphy to provide more context of the woman’s background. By creating this piece, we hope we can bring awareness to what Asian Americans have been and are still going through currently.

There is a purpose for guitars to have different shapes, colors, and materials. Some produce more clear and high-pitched sounds and some produces more heavy and low sounds.

Because they are different, the music can be completed.

Humans are same.

There is a purpose for us to have different ethnicity, sexuality, personality, and belief. Because we are different, the world can be enriched.

《Meaning & Purpose》

For our project, we wanted to focus on the theme of diversity and equality. This is a picture taken by 守厦 showing many different guitars. We wanted to portray the idea that even though differences set people apart, that doesn’t make anyone less important. This is especially important to remember in a time of COVID-19, which has raised anti-Asian hate. We wanted to spread the message that diversity and uniqueness should be embraced, not discriminated.
