Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull is a unique group of supremely talented musicians. They formed in 1967, and to this day they still perform live and more importantly produce new music which i find to be amazing Their music spans Prog rock, Folk, concept albums, Heavy rock, Blues, jazz fusion, and many others. The use of classical instruments, and new at the time, synthesizers, and drum machines. They also have about 30+ multi-platinum albums, which puts them in a tiny group of individuals. What fascinates me about them is their longevity in a pretty hard industry. They are nearly all in their 70’s and still tour extensively. What influences me about them is that they do not care about the critics, they play what they want, what makes them happy and that is their driving force. Rolling Stone Magazine described them as "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands. (Simon & Schuster, 2001). Tull toured with Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones in that very influential and seminal time in music. One of the reasons I like them so much is that each album is so different with so many different styles of music. They tell stories that immerse you in the story.

A progressive rock band, Polyphia's sound is composed of virtuosic guitar parts mixed with more metal tones, which evolved to electronic and hip-hop influences. They often feature other guest artists and are mainly instrumental bases with some vocal guests. I started listening to them because their music is melodic and they have so many different styles within their music. They create an unmistakable sound wall, where you hear the tightness, the timing, and how they flow together. I got into them via a YouTube video which showed just how well arranged their music actually is and then another video where the drummer lost his in-ear sound and the drum tech tapped out the entire performance on his leg and the drummer did not miss a beat, did not falter, kept time and carried on as if nothing at all had happened. there are not too many musicians who could do that.

One of the major influences of early American blues music in Europe. He was a pivotal player at the start of the British blues boom. Waters used themes from the blues players of the time and social issues in the creation of his music.

playing the slide guitar, often using a bottleneck or a metal tube played a style of blues that was more upbeat than the usual sad style of blues being played at the time. Jethro Tull incorporated his blues style into their music. He brought the storytelling aspect and 12-bar blues of the times and Tull incorporated this into their music. Ian Anderson has cited Muddy Waters as a major influence on his guitar-playing and songwriting style. Rather, D. (2020)

Meshuggah is well known for its innovative relentless musical style and complex, polymetered song structures and polyrhythms. You can instantly hear the technical parts and driving beats. They create a wall of sound that when you separate each instrument is very structured and each instrument adds to the drive and force of their music. You can see their influence on Polyphia mainly with their use of polyrhythms and their musicality and mastery of their respective instruments. They build a very layered sound which Polyphia has taken and added to their sound. Thomas Haake in an Interview said, "You grow tired of that perfect music, where there’s not a single flaw in there". "When you hear bands live, you realize pretty quickly they don’t sound the way they do on albums. You can’t just fix everything in real time. We wanted to get back to the vibe of what we grew up with, and the drive and the sound of our early years as a band." (Lake.D, Decibel Magazine, 2016)

A Master of rock and blues guitar, a singer, and songwriter. He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential guitarists in rock music. Polyphia's style however differs significantly from Claptons blues roots his influence is very evident when you look at their virtuosic guitar playing and their use of melodies. Clapton emphasizes tone and expression and you can see the correlation with Polyphia and how they push the boundaries in their musical abilities and use sound and textures. Clapton is a leader when you look at how diverse a range of artists he has collaborated with and this is obvious when you see the differing guest artists that have recorded with Polyphia. The links between them are not obvious, it is linked more to the technical style and willingness to innovate.
