As Japan's new leader Mutsuhito came into power, Japan has been making wise moves worldwide. Mutsuhito has brought great pride and nationalism throughout his new The new movement of Meiji also meaning “enlightened rule” is creating an ambitious, westernized way of life. Japan has been picking and choosing the top countries in the world such as Germany, America and Britain to trade and learn from. Japan has been taking the best influences from each country. Germany’s strong centralized government and army, Britain’s navy, and America’s public education was all brought to configure the rise of Japan as a superpower. Westernization has included trade, culture, power and peace throughout Japan. Industrialization has has also played a key role in the transformation of Japan tremendously. Japan’s newly found natural resources have created much beneficial trade and factory expansion. Coal production has grown half a million tons in 1875 to more than 21 million in 1913. Factories employing hundreds of thousands of citizens. Quality products has expanded greatly giving the country unique opportunities to trade. Shipbuilding and railroads made Japan easily traveled. The cash flow increase has exponentially expanded, while the economy has recently blown out of the water. Japan has become increasingly more aggressive throughout this movement, pushing toward being the top power in the world. Although a smaller country, Japan's previous victories in war over Russia and China has put them in a respectable position, and has shown strength as well as a serious threat. The expansion of Meiji has prospered Japan toward a top spot in the world and a force to be reckoned with.

Westernization from Europe in Japan By Curtis McGonigle

London- Foreigners are everywhere in Japan this is not what the Emperor will want the Japanese are supposed to be an independent hardworking people.Japan has had hardly any contact with the industrialized world while they were isolated. During the isolation, we have continued to trade with China, the Dutch and some merchants from Indonesia. Starting in the 19th century Westerners began to try and convince us to own their ports up for trade. The United States were the first ones to get the Japanese to open up their trading ports and the Europeans followed soon after. Even though Japan had finally opened up to trade with Western nations they were still in ancient times when it came to modernizing. Most of the Japanese were angry that the shogun had given in to the foreigner's demands. The Japanese people hoped that the new emperor Mutsuhito would help make Japan a more isolated nation like it used to be. However Mutsuhito did the complete opposite, he named his reign Meiji which meant enlightened. Mutsuhito thought the best way to try and stop westernization was to modernize. He sent diplomats to Europe and North America to study Western ways of life. The Japanese tried to take the best that the west had to offer and incorporate it into the Japanese culture. The Japanese took a liking to Germany's strong centralized government and used its constitution as a basis for their own new version. Japan also admired the discipline of the German army and the skills and power the British navy had. They tried to imitate these European nations and their military power. Once the 20th century had started, the Japanese economy had become as modern as the other leading economies in the world. Japan built its first railroad in 1872, the track connected Tokyo to Yokohama the city with the biggest port in Japan. This made bringing goods to other parts of Japan much easier as well as significantly improve travel and save Japanese people's time. Japan had hoped to modernize and avoid westernization but modernizing for Japan was westernizing. They based many of there new modern technologies and inventions on the ones in the Western world. Although they did not realize they were being westernized and did not want to, the Japanese were greatly helped by westernization and were changed forever because of it.

U.S Influence In Japan - Hunter Biliouris

The big news has arrived at the Britain post office. The headline is that Japan has opened ports to the U.S. We haven't dug much deeper but we know that it is exclusive for the U.S. We read that Millard Fillmore struck a deal with Japan to open 2 ports known as the Treaty of Kanagawa. Under these terms, Japan and soon china would have open the ports but we are left empty handed. We must fight for better to grow our country as a whole and take power from Japan. Japan is growing with their modernization and we are being left in the dark. The trade routes are killing us and we must change. Later, news was received that Japan has also extended right for many foreigners. We are being left and this is creating a loss of power. Foreign trade will beat us if we do not keep up.

-Proposal from Military submitted in the News

I propose we create a plan similar to the U.S to win over Japans ports to be open to trade. The U.S fleet sent 4 ships powered by steam and shoot cannons and demanded to agree to the letter of trade. We on the other hand have waited while Japans army's have gotten stronger. We will go in with double the amount of ships of the U.S and demand for two more ports to be open to use exclusively. This will give us the upper hand which will boost up back into a stronghold of worldly power.

With this we ask to to please sign and approve are request to be able to send ships to Japan to gain more power and more resources. With this we will be able to dominate the European powers and be ready for anything that is thrown our way. We Ask Politely but in swift manor to seize this great opportunity before we are too late.

Recent news has surfaces over in china that Japan is the stronger country in the south east of the world. This news makes surface after the connection with the U.S and Japan to make trade at the U.S ports. We would like to make a stand and show that we are the universal power through our good government, and the open door policy.

We unlike Japan have been very good with listening to the rebellions to make the government the best for the people. We have made peasants conditions better after the boxer rebellion. We listened to this and reformed to create a new government. We have also introduced the open door policy to be open to all trades of all nations to make up the most economical and best trading route in the southeast. This would protect the policies of the U.S trading rights in china, and china from colonization.

We would like to make this clear that it is are right as a country to stand up and believe that we are the best country. Japan has nothing on us and will never. We will always be the top country because of our land and rule. (We keep the right to bomb Japan if needed).

Japan gains military advantages from Europe By Curtis McGonigle

Paris- Maybe the Japanese were wrong about the Europeans, they have grown to become the most powerful military in all of Asia. Now that they have firearms and explosives they are able to keep up with other countries and not get annihilated with swords and less effective weaponry. When the Europeans first came here to Japan the people were afraid of what they would do and often engaged in battle with them. They would destroy the Japanese mowing them down with their guns while the Samurai charged in with their measly swords. Despite the Japanese gaining these advantages from westernization of other Europeans , they will never admit that we the Europeans helped them. No, the Japanese are far too proud to do that, that would bring dishonor upon their families relying on the Europeans. Now that they have the same technology and weapons as us they are a significant threat if our relationship strains any further. Hopefully we will remain peaceful with Japan the last thing we need is for a nation we just helped to turn on us. They have destroyed the Koreans and are beginning to oppress the Korean people we gave them weapons to defend themselves not conquer a new nation and expand. However these are the dangers new technology and weapons present, I sure hope things remain peaceful.

The Great Question some may say now a days. Both countries had their benefits and downside yet there is a definite answer to this question. Who reformed better? China allowed trade openly to sleazy yet clever Englishmen resulting in an opium overload into the country, tearing China from the inside out. Cash flow distributed out of the country as England won that battle. Japan was nearly forced to trade as countries all over the world lined up to trade camping out at the harbors of Japan and attempt to manipulate Japan just like China. Yet Japan learned from the mistakes of China’s failure to reform, and Japan and all their trade allies became a powerhouse. Unlike China’s open door policy allowing open trade with every nation, Japan picked and chose who they traded with. Instead of being stubborn with keeping old ways of living, Japan decided to embrace westernization and new ways of living by picking up industrialization and tactics that worked well for other countries leading to a sudden strength in the country. This sudden rush of strength resulted in taking over Korea and parts of China. China stood there taking the hits from other countries with their old tactics and ideas. Japan was a stronger force because they learned from China’s mistakes and made a powerful country as China continued to fall on a steep decline.
