Looking at magazine layout designers such as Joao Oliveira, Nils Cabral, and Neville Brody helped inspire the creation of my magazine layout thumbnails which inspired ways to combine image and type. These designers are relevant to this work as within their designs they explore different ways to grab a reader within their impact and information pages. Brody’s work helped the influence to discover different colour palettes and how they influence the attention of readers, whereas Cabral influences that less is more. It is necessarily important to fill a whole page with image and type but to concentrate on spacing, and that their layout is still effective. Other influences are seeing magazines in person and picking up any little details such as page numbers that help create a good detailed finish. Within the Wes Anderson project, I continued to develop my thumbnails by creating my own, knowing the information and imagery I was given. Throughout my work, I explored colour palettes, see how the connection of colours from the image into the pages work. Researching Brazil’s culture allowed me to discover a range of possible aesthetics, as the culture is filled with bright and bold colours, shapes and textures it broadens me to explore different directions. I wanted to step away from a traditional magazine layout, such as within basic imagery and black text, I aimed to make my pages fun and interactive. I explored different ways of laying out typography and bouncing the colours from the page to the images chosen to create visual connectivity. Creating mockups helped to visually picture the design from different angles and to develop little details, such as page numbers. I developed new thumbnails to relate to my chosen imagery and text, once I had one idea I explored ways how I could alter it or interpret it from a different light. Overall, I was not happy with the outcome of my Wes Anderson Impact page as I don’t think my idea was executed well enough and does not flow with the information page. On the other hand, I was pleased with the outcome of my Wes Anderson Information page as I was pleased with the thumbnail I developed from previous ones. In this project I defiantly struggled to teach myself new inDesign as I am completely new to it, thus preventing the execution of my work; however, I am happy with my Food project spreads. I think my food project's information spread was successful as it includes interesting elements to represent Brazil. However, the impact page appears a bit rushed, I think I felt that adding more elements would help fill the page whereas less is more in this case. I did gain research by looking at digital food recipe magazines, from the BBC, to see what elements I felt was missing which could be helpful in adding to my design. Additionally, I think I needed to include imagery of food within the project, whereas I concentrated on the execution of the culture rather than one specification within it.
