For this project I wanted to make a vase that tapered to a wave. For this I wanted a beech themed color way, but things soon didn't work out. I realized fairly quickly that the vase I took inspiration from was class, and glass and clay have very different capabilities. Because of this, I switched my plans quickly and adapted to my new realization.

Learning Curve

This is where I first learned than things go very bad if you don't listen super carefully to wrapping instructions. I wrapped it along with the wood, and the wood absorbed the water, not the clay. Because of this, I ended up with a giant gash in the top portion of the project. I learned from my mistake, but wasn't that mad because my plans at first also had a gash, so I thought I could make it work.

Change of plans

The wave taper that I wanted to use, didn't work out. I learned that glass has different abilities that clay does not. The clay would crack when I tries to bend the clay in the shape of a wave. A few day were spent on this, using a bunch of different techniques and methods. So in order to feel comfortable with the deadline, I switched plans. I wanted to make a container of sorts, that could also function as a lantern. So I cut the top 4-5 inches of the top to get rid of the gash. I made a new top and spent a few more days making it look like one piece. Structurally, I wanted to keep it sturdy, and this is where I learned about slip and minute additive clay. Also, I learned to add to much clay, then carve it to perfection.

Lantern Attractive Clay

I wanted a lot of light to show through the project, I also made big opening so that the project would be more light up, and functional. I tried to make deep lines with the dentist pick tool. The deep lines were used to give me a deep enough grove for a micro brush so slide in. I carved in a frightened looking face, and I think it turned out very good, being that it was free hand on a curved surface, and I'm not much of an artist. I thought it looked to bland so I added teeth, eye strains, and a tongue. To meet the height requirement, I added three functional handle loops. They looked a little bit wonky, but they do work, and are very strong. Plus, being that it is a lantern, the loops are strong enough to support the lantern if I even wanted to hang it from a string or something of the sort.

The two things I learned for sure in this project is that we have to adapt to adversity, and listen the first time so I have less things to have to adapt to. I put cobble stone glaze on bare bit-square, not remembering I needed a color to go under it. I would have been able to avoid this and was patient, but instead, I rushed when we had a substitute. I put the cobble stone on and when it dried the next day, Mrs. Abrams said I needed to cover it with another color, and to hope for the best because it all might fall of. I finished painting the face deep red and the handle kaleidoscope, and chose lapiz lagoon for the cobblestone parts. I painted more coats than I should have, but I knew that it would probably give a good contrast and have a better chance of sticking. In my opinion it turned out way better than I thought. Yes it is a bit rough, but it looks very different from other projects, and I like that. The paint crackled a lot and thick paint blobs remain. My favorite part is that the bare bit-square looks like concrete now, and it gives it a rustic type effect and feel. The color turned out way better than I could have imagined, and I'm glade I was able to have a positive experience while learning from what I did wrong.

I truly learned a lot during this project. I learned a lot goes into to planning than in other aspects of art. I feel as if I needed to plan a bit more, so that I wouldn't have had to go back and fix everything. I also learned that I need to listen more closely during class. If I would have done this, I would not have had the glaze problems I had. However, I am glade the way the it turned out. I did not expect it at all, and I way pretty happy when I saw it done. It is quite interesting to look and and feel, and it draws a lot of attention and questioning.
