Irene asks her grandma if she is ok and Edith just asks for her to put them back in the box and close it. Irene does and goes back to looking for old things of Peters that Edith may or may not want.

Later when they are done looking through the boxes Irene goes to bed. Edith is sleeping and Irene gets bored. She quietly goes up into the attic to find the journals. She begins to read them. Irene is horrified by what she was reading. Her grandparents survived the Holocaust.

Irene speaks out to the point that her voice is heard. Irene is happy she did this before her grandma. Now Edith is satisfied to die a peaceful death. She won't be reminded of how tragic Peters death was to her because of how he had to go first. He saved her life, and she is totally grateful for that.
...Irene hears the bell ring. Class was dismissed. She was free to go home and have her now grown dog stumble over his paws and greet her. She could see her mom making dinner. And remember how life can be full of tragedy, yet can be the most beautiful, happiest thing anyone could ever discover.
