The only thing keeping her alive is her composure and her internal thoughts. When talking about the world she not born into but was thrust into, Offred states, “I wait. I compose myself. My self is a thing I must now compose, as one composes a speech" (66). This quote shows that Offred has realized that composure is the only thing keeping her from being hung on The Wall. This also shows the lack of liberty she has since she was "made" by the government as opposed to being born as an individual with rights. It's a struggle for Offred's self-identity. Since Offred is not allowed any sort of human contact, she is really appreciative of any that she is fortunate to get, This justifies how, when she finds the Latin words "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum" engraved into her closet, she can't help but feel hopeful when she realized that someone could relate to the same situation she was going through. In the Gilead society, Offred knows that the only thing Handmaids are alive for is to provide children to their Commanders and this is the "task" that she must complete to survive.
