The Amazon River is located in Brazil, South America. It is 6,992 km in length. It also runs through Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia. The Amazon and the tributaries contribute to the largest river in the world. The average amount of excess water into the Atlantic Oceans is 175,000 m3 per second. The water discharged into the Atlantic Ocean is only one third of the water that falls into the basin. The mouth of the River goes into the Atlantic ocean, while the other water leads to the basin.

All humans interact with the Amazon River in different ways, some of these are listed below. The river is used to make scientific discoveries such as the Araguaia fresh water dolphin. It is also used for transport. Native Indians make small sailing boats and canoes to go fishing, these boats are made out of wood and most have bark roof to provide shade from the sun. It has been inhabited for over 10,000 years continuously. In 1541 the Spanish arrived on their shores, because they were running out of supplies. This was the first recorded time that the Amazonian's were discovered by outsiders.

Dams in the Amazon River have many good qualities for the environment and many bad qualities. Flooding on the Amazon used to be a very large problem, until the dams were built the Amazon flooded many times a year often taking tribal possessions with it, and sometimes even people. But since the dams have interfered with the water flow this now rarely happens, and even if it does the effects are not as severe. But building dams takes a toll on the environment. Because of the dams along the river, many animal’s migration paths have been interfered with. These animals include many fish and dolphin species. Many people in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia are against the building of dams, but the Governments cannot be swayed. Many local people have protested against the building of dams on the Amazon river. There are many good effects and bad effects to building dams on the Amazon, such as, the stopping of flooding and migration of animals.

The Yanomami tribe is the largest of the Amazonian tribes. They live in Northern Brazil, near the Southern border of Venezuela. The tribe was found in the 1940's by the Brazilian Government, this was the first recorded time that this tribe had contact with the outside world. Like most tribes, the work is divided through gender, the men hunt (this is 10% of the food that the tribe has) while the women of the tribe gather nuts and tend to crops (this is 80% of the food the tribe has). Both women and men go fishing (this is the last 10% of the food that the tribe collects and grows).
