Rosemarked by Livia Blackburne

Everything is controled by the emperor of Ampara. Society is split in two: Central Ampara and Monyar. These kingdoms are found not only battling against the Rose plague but also finding their way to the emperor's rules. One way that Rosemarked shows its dystopian society is by the way the emperor rules over the people, and not giving them freedom. We can see it a lot with the Amparan's soldiers. The emperor gives them the right to do anything so they act as they want. When the Dara people surrendered to the Amparan forces, soldiers moved in with families. Zivah's family had to make space for them, feed more mouth, and sometimes hands can become very tipsy. Zivah says, "the empire can be strict with those who surrender to them, but they are ruthless against those who resist" (Blackburne 11). So in this society you either did what you had to do without getting in their way, or you would pay the consequences.

-Gaby Martinez

Within all these Dystopian societies, they are very well much different. But they are also very similar. In each society, the people have some type of dictatorship or monarchy ruling of one or more people. The people holding power are being presented as a "god" or someone who has saved them, turn out to be the ones who are doing the opposite. There is no freedom. You cannot express yourself the way you want to. In these societies, everyone is being watched. Even if they think they are not. Someone is always watching.

Within in the story "Children of Eden" by Joey Graceffa, the main character is faced with finding herself and her society with all the limits and restrictions that come with it. As the government proposes the utopia of a world that was recreated after humans killed earth and anything living other than themselves. Being the second-child in a world of only firsts (she thinks) due to the one child per couple law, she then meets other second-children and very soon realizes she cannot trust people, even if they are just like her. Her parents had the perfect life for her to disappear with a new family, and become "normal". But after sneaking out, getting caught and her mother sacrifices her life for Rowan to get away, she is continuously trying to figure out the truth. Not only does she discover that, but discovers the earth never died.
This book is related to dystopian because there is propaganda within the entire thing, of the central government portraying that everything is perfect. The people are not free but are told that they are. You were imprisoned, or even sentenced to execution if you were helping a second child, protecting, or even just knew; if you were spreading conspiracies about there being a better world outside of Eden, and of course, if you did not follow any rules. And it doesn't help when the new head Chancellor is going to be your father. Now you are somewhere fighting for your life, and your first-born brother is sentenced to execution under the order of the chancellor.

- Ja'Nyia Gordon

Taken by Erin Bowman

The people of Claysoot never openly question how they got there and don't dare to ask questions about the wall. The founders or original children of Claysoot run and regulate the town. At the age of 18 every boys disappears. The mystery of the heist is a fate that every baby boy must accept at birth. The town thinks that the founders are in charge, but don't know what lies on the other side of the wall. People have tried to climb the wall, trying to escape the heist, but appear back on the side of Claysoot burned and lifeless. The main character, Gray learns that he is a twin and should have been heisted with his older brother at the age of 18. Unheisted, Gray decides to climb the wall to find out if greater hope lives behind the enclosed town of Claysoot. He is stunned with bewilderment when he realizes the life he and his people have been living is a lie and there are advancements and greater things beyond the wall.

This book is under the genre dystopian because of the controlled lives of the Claysoot people. They had no idea that their lives were an experiment and that there were greater things beyond struggle on the other side of the wall that only brought death to the people brave enough to try and conquer it.

- Aniyah Jones

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid's tale is about a woman named Offred who is now a Handmaid. The United States of America turns into a the Republic of Gilead which is a totalitarian and theocratic state. Because of the low reproductive rates as in infertility rising, handmaids then were assigned to couples to birth children for them.

The book is in the dystopian genre because of it being a near future world where christians have overthrown the government and set up a totalitarian theocracy. The government having strict policies that they live by and if not obeyed, you will be strictly punished.
- Liliana Mata

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

This novel is written off the classical Cinderella tale that is retold around the world but with a scientific twist. Cinder is neglected by her step mom not only because she was adopted but because she's a cyborg. She was one of many that were made in a lab and left to die until what was going to be her father found out about her. In New Beijing where this story takes place androids and hover cars are the norm. Given that the society is controlled by a prince and his regime the citizens rely heavily on his support and dictation when things go wrong. Suddenly, A deadly plague broke out and started ravenging the population. Since then the nation relied on cyborgs to turn themselves in to test possible cures because they're "not considered human" especially Cinder. Little does she know the Lunars from space are watching, waiting to make their move.

Tori Virkstis

Altered by Jennifer Rush

Altered is about these four boys living in the basement of Anna's home with her father. Her father works for "The Branch". Anna's father monitors and administers treatment for the boys. The branch is constantly doing experiments on the boys to make a better human being. A superhuman.
They don't remember their past because they are given injections not to. Since Anna was in her early teen years she had discovered the boys and has helped them and has a connection with them. One day the branch comes in to take the boys away to a location that they say is confidential.

This book is classified in the dystopian genre because of the governments control over the people they experiment. This starts to get the main character Anna to question that if these boys are in her basement then she wonders how many other people are also being killed hurt or being altered from the experiments “Hope is a waking dream.I let the words echo in my head" (106) The quote reminded me of a certain feeling you get when in your chest when everything you think was correct and the rules that you followed were all a lie. That the thing you most thought you were doing. LIke helping in Anna's case was wrong. That the boys were taken advantage of without their consent. In dystopian societies this often happens. There is somewhat of a dictatorship and the people have no word into what is going to occur to them or the people around them.

Yadira Zamora

Under The Never Sky By Veronica Ross

Under The Never Sky is about a girl named Aria. She has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

This book is classified in the dystopian genre because Citizens live in propaganda. They live in pods like I explained above. In the pods, the population uses technology to escape their confined environment. Also, it is information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. In the book, Aria lives in this world, and while her actual contact with human beings is limited, she lives an active virtual life.

-Mikayla Rosales
