Boon Sin
The video explicating colour psychology in film reminds me of the previous video I saw for PD, in which Tarantino’s bold use of colours created strong, memorable moments in his films.

A movie which illustrates this concept is “Hero” (2002), in which different scenarios are washed in different colour palettes to reflect the theme of the segment – red for passion, green for hope, etc. That movie was a beautiful piece of art.

An important point raised by the video is the need for pre-production planning to create certain effects visually during the filming, rather than wait for post-production work. While we are not trying to create artistic productions like Zhang Yimou, awareness of the colour composition in our productions could add to their effectiveness, as well as aesthetic quality. This might be something worth paying some attention to.

In the past, which is just 3 months ago, telecommuting seems like a taboo subject to firms. Now, it has become a new normal. Many find it more fruitful to work from home as we could do away dolling up and commuting.
Because of this pandemic, we have no choice but to set foot in the future trend -- that is to work digitally. Of course digital transformation does not happen overnight, it requires a lot of discussion and adaptation.
Kevin - Storytelling in Video Games

The basics of storytelling in most mediums like books, TV and film are essentially the same. You've got a beginning, a middle and an end. Words like setup, confrontation, resolution, climax, plot points all come up when you think about how best to tell a story. Put them all together well and perhaps you've got a pretty good fantasy novel, or a TV Western, maybe a sci-fi trilogy movie.

But what makes storytelling in video games so different?

I don't know if you've been reading all the nonsense I've been posting on these padlet pages, but if you have (I am truly touched), then you'd maybe remember that I previously touched on 360° videos. There was one key word within the gibberish I was typing that describes what 360° videos or VR videos are about. Interaction or interactivity.

Storytelling in video games is not vastly different from storytelling in regular mediums. Fans of the Final Fantasy series will attest to the wondrous stories of the games filled with excitement and tears, love and hate, beautiful world building, character introductions, plot twists (I'm looking at you, Sephiroth) and satisfying, or in some cases, unsatisfying endings. But the key difference is this: in a video game, you interact with the characters and to a certain extent, with the story.

https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ChrisStone/20190107/333798/The_evolution_of_video_games_as_a_storytelling_medium_and_the_role_of_narrative_in_modern_games.php

This chap wrote a long essay about the narrative in video games and it's evolution. But let's get down to the gist of it.

There are different types of storytelling or narrative used in games. A story can be told in a linear fashion, where no matter what choices you make or what you do, the story advances as it is. You have no control on how the story turns out. Your interaction with the story is just pushing it forward.

Then there is the string of pearls model, where the story is still told in a linear fashion, but you can put it on hold to branch out and go do something else like chop 100 wood for the villager or help a little girl find her cat. The story still turns out the same, but you have control over when you push it forward.

Next there is the branching narrative, where your choices affect how the story turns out. This is similar to those old choose-your-own-adventure books where your choices could lead you to the page that says: "You tripped and fell down the well and your story ends here." A random conversation might end up being a pivotal point in the game's story which decides what path you take or even how the story ends. A failed mission might mean you have to take a loser's route and work doubly hard to get a successful ending. Your choices or your performance dictate where the story goes.

Lastly there is the amusement park model, which is similar to the branching narrative, but less restrictive. In recent years, open world games like Skyrim or Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have become fairly popular due to the amount of freedom given to the player. In Skyrim, you can deviate from the main storyline and do hundreds of sidequests just by exploration of the vast open world and meeting different people, some who might give you quests. In Breath of the Wild, you are given one mission. Defeat Ganon. How you get there is solely up to you. Do you take the route the developers intended by experiencing every quest and dungeon? Or do you rush Ganon the moment you step out the starting area? Both paths are possible. It's up to the player's choice.

Over the years, games have been evolving to the latter two, where the player is allowed choices and have an impact on the outcome of the game or how they want to play the game. This means that nowadays, players have more interaction with games than before.

When playing a game, a player is interacting with the game through the rules provided by the game, which forms the basis of gameplay. This interaction also impacts how the story is told. By interacting with the characters of the game, the player becomes part of the story. Interaction allows the player to become the main character of the story, and thus the story is being told from the player's point of view.

So why am I sitting here prattling on about games when our bread and butter are videos? In the scant few years I have been here, we have tried our hand at an interactive video (perhaps more from before I joined). We are perhaps looking into 360° videos or VR videos. The important part of these two types of videos is interaction. Where better to learn from than the dark lord of interactive storytelling: video games?

In recent years, more narrative-directed adventure games have been released that deviate from standard adventure games. These games are very similar to choose-your-own-adventure games and even interactive videos. Telltale Games released an interactive story game based on AMC's The Walking Dead, which featured the story of said TV series, but giving the player the ability to make choices to drive the story where they want it to go and affect future events and sequels. This allowed players to personalise their own Walking Dead story.

In the essay linked above, there is a portion about interactive stories where there is a quote from Graham Reznick, a Hollywood writer. He says, "what’s exciting about games, and specifically narrative-based games, is that you can take that approach from filmmaking, the curated narrative, and then explode it out so that the designers and writers of the game are curating a narrative environment for the player, but the player becomes a complicit collaborator”.

So in a certain sense, narrative-based games are like an interactive video or movie, only difference is that this game-video-movie can have different story paths and endings instead of just one storyline and ending, and all this is decided by the player.

So perhaps there can be a lot we can learn about storytelling from video games. What type of story would be best suited for an interactive video? How do we decide where a story should branch? How many branches and endings should the story have? Where can we insert choices to have a better impact on the storytelling? What types of choices do we offer? What sort of characters work best in an interactive video? How do we go about giving maximum immersion for the player-viewer? How much interaction do we give the player-viewer? Are we allowing them enough freedom with how the story progresses? Or just minute decisions that might not impact the story at all? I personally think that the success of an interactive video and its story lies in how well the interactions between the player-viewer and the story are executed.

In conclusion, everyone should play more video games.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

A Day in the Life of a Production Assistant

https://youtu.be/UPBfoEFgR28

This video shows a day of Colin West Mcdonald's life as a Production Assistant.

This video brings back so many memories, for I have also been a production assistant, about 12 years ago when I was a young fledgling looking to take flight into the media industry. As such, I will give a little insight into what my life was like when I was a production assistant on a children's cooking show.

Production assistants aren't always appreciated. As Colin mentions, they are usually the lowest lifeforms on a film set. However, much of what they do impacts the whole program/film.

This is also true in a local context, perhaps even more. As a production assistant, one helps out doing menial jobs in the pre-production phase, like in my case, cold calling restaurants to ask if they would like to participate in the program.
After that, we would have to help with scheduling, taking down everyone's availability, from the cast to the crew and the locations and try to piece everyone together.

Once production started, I was also tasked with art design for props, the table setting, crockery and cutlery as well as decorations for the location . I also had to buy meals for everybody on set. On top of all that, I was expected to help the crew as a junior grip or as a camera assistant.
Need an extra to fill up an empty taxi stand? I would be there.
Need a bottle of water? I'd be there to offer you one.

Skipping meals weren't out of the ordinary then, for while everyone was having their meals, I had to prep for the next segment. By the time everyone was done and filming resumed, I had other tasks. However, for overseas collaborations or shoots with unionized/guilded crew, there was a rule that lunch time of 30 minutes only starts when the LAST person gets his/her food.

Once filming was over, I had to wash and dry all the cutlery, crockery and cookware. Packing all other items came after that.

As everyone made their way home, I had to go back to the office and pack and prep for the next day of shoot. Footage that was shot on that day was also handed over to the editor. Batteries were also charged. Only then, would I be able to return home.

At that time, I was working almost 16 hours a day. I would go to work at 5am and return home only at midnight. I barely saw my parents.

As I mentioned, PAs aren't always appreciated.

I remember the AD made a mistake in scheduling once and had me call the cast to reschedule. This local "celebrity" chef got upset when I told his personal assistant about a change in plans. As I was in charge of liaising with him, he called me up and railed at me over the phone.

One also had to be "smart" and learn the habits of the different directors, producers and crew. For example, one gaffer might like his filters attached close to the bulbs. Another might like it the other way around. Some doesn't want the PA touching the lights, so I just ran electrical points for them.

Early on, I made a mistake by employing one gaffer's lighting preference for another gaffer. He wasn't pleased and believe me, he made it known to me that he did not want it done up that way.

Up to this point, I'm pretty sure you guys think that it was all doom and gloom. It wasn't.

As I shuttled around the different departments, I learned.
As a junior grip, I asked the gaffer about his grip techniques and learnt those.
As a camera assistant, I asked the DP why he chose to shoot or light that way and I learnt.
As I helped the producers and directors, I learnt about scheduling, scripting, preparations for filming and directing.

I even had the honour of helping out with scripting and I wrote one segment of an episode.

Of course, in true TV fashion, nobody would ever impart their skills to you on the very first day. You had to keep working hard and observe them and learn first. Ask them a question about it later and if you don't get an answer, ask again.
I was happy when I finally got a straight answer from the DP one day. This person later became my mentor.

Production assistants may be the lowest ranking person on a film set but what they do impacts the outcome greatly. If there were no PAs, everyone else would have a much harder time working smoothly as they wouldn't be focused on what they are supposed to do. PAs take away all the menial jobs so that the professionals can do their jobs.

I remember thinking to myself then, "Man, you really got to love all this to eke a living in this industry."

And I loved every second of it.

Daniel Arsham – Art from the 31st Century | The Hour Glass

Tian Soon

"This is form a series sponsored by The Hour Glass.

Daniel Arsham is an American contemporary artist based in New York City. His works revolve strongly around the concept of a hypothetical future time, attempting to materialise his ideas and concepts through art/cultural mediums such as architecture, archaeological sculptures, drawings and films."

Art created under the umbrella of "Contemporary Art" is sometimes mired in controversy. Just search "Jeff Koons Reclaims the Throne as World’s Most Expensive Living Artist" and you can see for yourself the kind of art accepted by the "highbrows" of the art world, which borders on the mundane and superficial. Just expand a mold of an inflatable plastic rabbit or something commonplace with expanding rubber solution (yah, you heard that right - there is such a thing) and then cast it with some super duper material, polish it and paint it with something real glam glam and you have expensive art to sell. Sorry for the rant but that sounds a lot like cheating or, worse still, plagiarism!

Such is the context with which I critiqued this video after witnessing instance after instance of using real world objects as the center piece of his artwork. Just give it a watch, they are all there - Venus de Milo, Pokemon, Super Mario, c3po, Snoopy, Ernie, Big Bird, NY Mets baseball cap, vintage camera, etc., etc. Sure, his art is about more than just those things and he does cast them with interesting materials and degraded them to give a worn down, apocalyptic feel. But his having a large entourage of interns or staff sculptors to accomplish his 'vision' whilst he walks around giving directions is about as long a throw away from the image of a starving artist as one can get. I know, I know - I get it that big name artists like Michelangelo have been doing these kind of things for eons, making use of apprentices to help out - but, and this is a very big BUT, pun fully intended - only with mundane tasks.

"Did Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel by himself? - Quora. Kate Graham, History and travel dork. Michelangelo had numerous assistants to help him construct the wooden scaffolds, plaster the ceiling, and transfer the cartoons to the wet plaster. The actual painting was done by him and only by him, however."

Which Synchronise Point to choose. The most convenient way is to pick Audio.

Depending on scenarios, you will have to know which selection to pick under Audio, Sequence Settings. If you have a separate stand alone audio file, Camera 1 should be pick, otherwise, stick to All Camera.

Viewing and Editing Your Source Sequence into a New Sequence

After Premiere Pro has created the multi cam sequence, it will appear at the project panel but it will not be operating the same as a normal sequence.

The multi cam sequence acts like a hybrid; half clip, half sequence.

When clicking on the multi cam sequence, it will play at the source panel instead. Depending on which audio/camera are being turned on, you will see that panel first on the source panel.

After deciding which in and out points, you can pick New Sequence From Clip or simply just drag the sequence in the the empty Timeline.

Cutting in Real-time with the Multicamera View

After inserting creating the new sequence at the timeline, editing the multi camera sequence will take place at the program panel. You can see the multi cam angles there. Just need to make sure that the Toggle Multi Camera View is activated on the button bar.

To be able to edit the multi cam, you do not edit the cut at the Timeline sequence. At the program panel, hit playback and pick the video at the timing which you want to cut to the other angle. After picking which timing for which multi camera, it will reflect on the Timeline sequence. This applies to real-time edits.

If it is a very long video, you can just drag the playhead at the Timeline video then cmd click on the angle of the multi-cam which you want over at the Program panel, instead of editing it in real time.

Refining Your Multicam Edit

If tweaking is needed on the multi cam sequence, hover the playhead over the point at the timeline sequence and click on the angle you need at the project/multi cam panel. It will instantly replace edit from one camera angle to another. You can also right click, choose Multi-Camera, then choose the camera angle.

You can also use Rolling Edit tool if you decide the cut point should be earlier. It does not affect the synchronisation at all.

However, tools like Ripple, Slip and Slide will cause the multicam edit to be out of sync.

Syncing Separately Recorded Audio and Video

Exploring the tool Merge Clips for syncing a separate video(with bad audio) and audio (with good audio) file.

Choosing the video and audio clips, right click to choose Merge Clip which will bring up a window.

Again, it is best to pick Audio. One very important thing is to make sure that Remove Audio From AV Clip is pick. The AV Clip it refers to is the video clip with the bad audio.

Another sequence will appear on the Project panel. You can view it on the Source panel when you double click it. It may appear black and also longer than the original video but that is because the good audio file clip may have been turn on earlier thus the duration is longer for the overall merged clip.

The Impact of Akira: The Film that Changed Everything

Tian Soon

My favourite Japanese Manga from my younger days as I was not into bug-eyed beauties and fairy tale stories. Never got to watch it on big screen here but I vaguely recall it being screened on local TV during some holiday many years ago. Although I've bought a few copies of the paperback graphic novel and waited with bated breath for the next book in the series each time I finished one, I somehow lost interest over the years and never quite got to know the exact outcome of the series. So I did not realise the film was a highly truncated version of the original book series. But what would one expect from such a magnum opus translated to screen and hand drawn at from 12 at 24 frames per second. Given the epic landscapes portrayed and the amount of detail poured into the morphing body of Tetsuo, no wonder they chose not to do multiple films to remain faithful to the book series, despite having a gigantic 11 billion Yen budget. That's about 102 million USD!

Here's a quote form the video:
"The film is the first half of the first volume and the last half of the last volume with a kind of amalgamated middle third that struggles to link these two divergent pieces of storytelling together".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqVoEpRIaKg

Why we love repetition in music

Tian Soon

My take - the human mind is uniquely attuned to recognising patterns. Music, at least regular music we've come to love and cherish, whether it be classical or pop, comes to us prepackaged with built in patterns formed through repetition in the chorus and highlights at strategic temporal locations to arrive at a pleasing composition, just like in the fine or graphic arts, or even elegant software coding, which is another form of art for the mathematically inclined. Without repetition, there would be no pattern, and without pattern, there would be no easy way to mentally tag a piece of favourite music and slot it in the recesses of one's mind for easy recall at a future date. My 2 cent's worth. :)

https://www.ted.com/talks/elizabeth_hellmuth_margulis_why_we_love_repetition_in_music#t-88140

I borrowed my friend’s macbook pro laptop to explore Adobe Premiere 2020 version, Version 14.2.0 (build 47).

The amazing new feature I like very much is to be able to open a few projects simultaneously! Can add footage or music or effects used in another project real time. No need to open and close projects.

Music level can drag up to 15db instead of 6db.

For Lumetri Color, another added feature is the Face detection in Color Wheels & Match which can help to match between clips. Faster way to colour correct skin tone.

Essential Sound is another added feature which is quite useful. Can assign a tag to the selection to enable editing options based on the audio type. There are presets which can help to repair or enhance. For example, I laid 1 music track against 1 narration track; I tagged the music as background music and it will do an auto balancing against the narration track. So cool! Narration can choose presets too. For example, can balanced a female/male voice instantly, or, make it sound like from television, telephone or radio, from a distance etc.

There is a History tab which you can undo certain actions, like in photoshop.

There is a new set of transitions. VR chroma leaks, VR Gradient wipe, VR Iris wipe, VR light leaks, VR light rays, VR Mobius zoom, VR Random blocks, VR Spherical Blur. All still can edit n add keyframes!

Audio effects have some new effects to play around too.

Under File tab, other than create New project, there are “Production” and “Team Project”. Not too sure of its usage. Will need to explore.

Can’t wait to lay my hands to edit using the latest Premiere!

That’s all for now. Will share more when I find time to hands on more. Do let me know if you are curious of what other features you read and want me to try.

By W.Song
