When Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Russian-German non-aggression pact, they were agreeing to take no military action against each other for the next 10 years. THis was significant because Hitler and Stalin did not like each other, but they both used the agreement for their own benefit.

Hitler broke the Munich Pact, and the Soviet Union joined forces with Germany to invade Poland. The Nazis and Soviets sent troops in from all directions and over 2000 tanks and 1000 planes were used to advance on Poland’s capital, Warsaw. This event was so significant because it was the beginning of the war and it was the first example of Hitler’s blitzkrieg strategy.

German invasion of Norway and Denmark- April 9, 1940

German warships entered Norwegian ports from Narvik to Oslo. They took over Norway by deploying thousands of German troops. German troops took over Denmark at the same time by occupying Copenhagen and other cities. King Christian X of Denmark surrendered very quickly because he knew his army wouldn’t be able to fight off a German invasion. This event was significant because it proved to the US and Britain that Germany was a threat and it brought Germany into a position to invade outward from the mainland of Europe towards Iceland, Greenland, and potentially North America.

France invaded and divided- May 10, 1940

Germany invaded France on May 10, 1940 but the Battle of France lasted until June 25, 1940. The Franco-German Armistice was signed on June 22, 1940. This agreement divided France into two zones. One zone was occupied by the German military and one was for the French to have complete control over. France agreed to the Armistice because they knew they would have a legal government in Paris that could potentially negotiate a peace treaty. This event was significant because conquering France was one of Hitler's main goals and he ended up succeeding.

Germany’s main goal was to invade France, but in order to do so successfully they needed to also invade the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. This event was significant because occupying the Netherlands would also prevent England from preparing their military on the European mainland. Germany conquered Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg by catching them all off guard using the infamous Blitzkrieg tactic.

“Miracle” at Dunkirk- May 26 1940.

The “Miracle” at Dunkirk was the evacuation of 338,226 British and French troops from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in northern France, to England. This lasted from May 26-June 4 1940. This event was significant because it represented a turning point in the war for the Allies. Germany hoped they would defeat the British at Dunkirk, leading to Britain negotiating with them. Instead, the evacuation represented Britain’s perseverance and showed that they were not going down without a fight.

Operation Sea Lion- September 1940

Hitler offered Britain a negotiated peace settlement, but Britain declined. After Britain declined, Hitler wanted to invade them quickly before they had time to recover from their previous defeat. Operation Sea Lion was Germany’s invasion plan. However, the German air force could not defeat the British air force, so Operation Sea Lion ended up being postponed indefinitely. This operation was significant because it was never carried out. No one can predict what the exact outcome would have been if Hitler ended up going through with it.
