Courtney: Student engagement is the first step in the learning process. If students are not engaged and actively participating in each lesson, they cannot begin to comprehend the material. This is incredibly evident in elementary classrooms, but can also carry into our class. In order to be engaged in an online course, "discussion" is necessary. It will help us to share ideas and become more active members of our learning.
http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2013/11/a-must-see-visual-featuring-5-levels-of.html

Nick: Student engagement is vital for students to learn at any level. It can be difficult when it comes to adults. We have all been a part of a PD where the presenter just could not reel us in. For us to be engaged in an online course, we really need to take the time each day to read what our classmates are posting and try to apply it to our own situations and then respond. This post has many different ways to enhance student engagement. http://www.teachthought.com/pedagogy/student-engagement/27-ways-to-increase-student-engagement-in-learning/

I found this slide from a PowerPoint that was put together by an app company (http://www.slideshare.net/HamishKennedy/3-engaging-students). I like this visual because it encompasses what engagement looks like in the classroom. There are measurable parts and observable parts; both of which are very important in learning and being engaged. Being engaged, in an activity or overall for a class, allows students to gain the most in terms of knowledge and learning.

Stephanie: Whomever posted the Horizon Website information about student engagement...love it I am defiantly going to try the secret answer where the students holds up their response in front of their heart using numbers 1-5. There is also an idea about a Gallery Walk. I took a MAISA conference last year and one of the teachers used that in her classroom for the final report in Writers Workshop. She incorporated milk and cookies to simulate the "adult" beverages and food we get when walking through a gallery. She said the kiddos loved it!

Stephanie: I am obsessed with pinterest and following teacher blogs. I found a good post from Adventures in Literacy Land. She blogged about school wide engagement using a Graffiti Wall. Very cool! Students of all grades write on the wall about their favorite books. Not only are they reading but also incorporating writing as well.
