In 1944 he joined the African National Congress(ANC) a protest movement that wanted black South Africans to have the same rights as the white people. In 1960 the government banned the ANC. Mandela criticised the government and he protests. In 1962 at 46 years old he arrested and in 1964 he was sent to prison on Robben Island for life. The prisoners had to hard physical work and the condition there were very bed. In the 1960 other countries began to oppose in 1990 after 27 years Mandela was finally released from prison. In the 1994 elections, black south Africans could vote for the first time and they choose Mandela for to be her first black president.
