Greetings! My name is Jhonna Mae M. Elman. I love the language aspect of Pop Culture, particularly the phenomenon of how the masses influence the shift and update of new words and lingo.

I specifically love the video game side of Pop Culture, although my tastes are quite unique compared to what is popular. I also really like creative literature, specifically poetry. I am very fond of animation as I think it is a beautiful medium that does not deserve to be called children's media. Lastly, I also dearly love music created in the pop culture scene, however I am quite picky and tend to choose music that most people do not listen compared to what is popular.

Today, I will be discussing the phenomenon of how Language keeps changing in the Pop Culture Sphere. How every few months, some new word or phrase gets popular and spreads like wildfire. Just recently, the word "rizz" which is short-hand for "charisma" began to spread, to the point where even I use it occasionally. And to think how some words somehow update themselves, such as the word, "noob" was derived originally derived from "noobie", which was a newer spelling of "newbie". Lastly, we will mourn in silence for the old word trends that have since died out, such as people calling the "World Wide Web" as Dubdubdub, which even I had no idea of.

Now, with how maleable and ever changing language is in Pop Culture, there has been attempts to control such change. To cite a general example, there is this process of genericization, where brand name becomes so common that it turns into a common noun, which does not sound too bad for our daily lives, but have serious legal consequence for the companies in question. There has been some action to mitigate such thing, such as the company Xerox encouraging those to calling it a "photocopy" especially here in the Philippines. Or Nintendo's frankly over the top ceast and desist efforts to make everyone know to call their products a "Nintendo insert console name" and the like.

A more sad example is in the Kpop community, where at some point, BTS fans have lashed out to other people for using the purple heart emoji as they have apparently "claimed" it and only BTS fans are able to use it. There were also some confusion with the band name of "BTS", as it is also a common abbreviation of the term "Behind the scenes", usually in context of movie or video game production. Some fans have wrongly accused people of using the BTS name for clout. A comparitively minor form of agenda if I do say so myself.
