The concept of "thawab" (spiritual merit or reward) is central to the Islamic worldview, and it accrues from performing good deeds and acts of piety. Allah (God) is Generous and multiplies the rewards for good actions, while sins are typically recorded as a single bad deed. How worship is rewarded:

1. Forgiveness of Sins: Many acts of worship are expiations for sins. For example:

Prayer (Salah): The five daily prayers and Friday prayers are said to expiate sins committed between them, provided major sins are avoided. Ablution (wudu) before prayer also washes away sins.

Walking to the Masjid: Every step taken towards the mosque for prayer is said to wipe away a sin and raise one's status.

2. Multiplied Rewards: Allah is immensely generous and can multiply the reward for good deeds many times over.

General Principle: A good deed can be rewarded ten times its worth, up to seven hundred times, or even more, depending on the sincerity of the intention and adherence to the Prophet's teachings.

Specific Acts:

Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): Reciting phrases like "SubhanAllah," "Alhamdulillah," "La ilaha illa Allah," and "Allahu Akbar" carries immense rewards, such as being equivalent to hundreds or thousands of good deeds, removing sins, or planting trees in Paradise.

Charity (Sadaqah): Spending in the way of Allah is likened to a grain that sprouts seven ears, with a hundred grains in each ear, meaning multiplied rewards.

Reciting Quran: Even reciting a single letter of the Holy Quran brings immense reward.

3. Spiritual and Worldly Benefits: Beyond rewards in the afterlife, worship brings numerous benefits in this life:

Inner Peace and Tranquility: Remembering Allah and engaging in worship brings peace and satisfaction to the heart.

Strengthening the Bond with Allah: Dedicating worship solely to Allah fosters a deep and personal relationship with the Creator, providing solace and guidance.

Protection from Sins and Evils: Constant remembrance of Allah helps Muslims resist temptations and strive for a righteous life.

Opening Doors of Provision: Fearing and obeying Allah can lead to increased lawful provision and success in this world.

4. Continuous Rewards (Sadaqah Jariyah): Some good deeds, even after a person's death, continue to bring rewards:

Ongoing charity: Such as building a mosque, digging a well, or establishing an endowment.

Beneficial knowledge: Knowledge that benefits others.

A righteous child who prays for them.

In essence, worship in Islam is not just a duty but a profound opportunity for believers to earn immense rewards, both spiritual and worldly, and to draw closer to their Creator.

25/4 WEEK 2- LEARN ABOUT SALAH FOR WOMEN

Salah (prayer) is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it is obligatory for every sane, adult Muslim. While the fundamental principles and steps of Salah are the same for both men and women, there are some differences in the postures and modesty requirements for women.

I. Pre-requisites for Salah (for all, including women):

Cleanliness (Taharah):

Body, Clothes, and Place of Prayer: All must be free from impurities such as urine, blood and others.

Wudu (Ablution): A ritual washing to purify oneself from minor ritual impurity. This involves washing the hands, mouth, nose, face, forearms, wiping the head, and washing the feet.

Ghusl (Full Bath): A full ritual bath is required after major ritual impurity such as after menstruation, childbirth, sexual intercourse. Women cannot pray or fast during their menstrual period or postpartum bleeding (Nifas). They are exempted from these prayers and do not need to make them up later.

Covering the Awrah (Modesty):

For women, the Awrah (parts of the body that must be covered) during prayer is generally the entire body except for the face and hands. Many scholars also include the feet. It is highly recommended to cover the feet as well, to be on the safe side.

Attire: Clothing should be loose-fitting, opaque (not see-through), and should not reveal the body's shape. Tight clothing, even if it covers the body, is generally discouraged as it defeats the purpose of modesty. A prayer dress or a loose abaya with a hijab (head covering) is ideal. The hijab must cover the hair, neck, and chest.

Facing the Qibla:

One must face the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during prayer.

Intention (Niyyah):

The intention for the specific prayer (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) must be made in the heart before beginning. It does not need to be spoken aloud.

Prayer Times:

Each of the five daily prayers has a specific time window within which it must be performed.

II. Important Considerations for Women in Salah:

Congregational Prayer: While women can pray in congregation, their prayer at home is generally considered more rewarding. If they pray in a mosque, they should pray behind the men, typically in separate rows or sections designated for women. A woman can lead other women in prayer, standing in the middle of the first row.

Voice in Prayer: When praying alone or with other women, a woman can recite aloud in the prayers where recitation is audible (Fajr, Maghrib, Isha). However, if there are non-Mahram (non-closely related) men present who can hear her, she should lower her voice.

Nullifying Factors: Besides the general nullifying factors of Salah such as breaking wudu, excessive movement, laughing aloud, talking intentionally, exposing Awrah, specific to women is the onset of menstruation or postpartum bleeding.

Key Differences in Postures for Women (focused on modesty):

Raising Hands: To shoulder level (men to ear level).

Hand Placement: On the chest (men below the navel).

Ruku' (Bowing): Body more collected, elbows closer to sides, fingers close together (men spread out).

Sujud (Prostration): Limbs drawn close together, stomach on thighs, elbows on the ground (men spread out, stomach off thighs, elbows off ground). Feet usually extended to the right, not upright.

Sitting (Jalsah & Tashahhud): Sitting on the left buttock with both feet extended to the right side (Tawarruk) or a similar modest position (men sit on the left foot with the right foot upright).

It's important to note that while these are widely accepted differences based on scholarly interpretations and narrations, the core essence and spiritual connection of Salah remain the same for everyone. The aim is to achieve humility, submission, and devotion to Allah.

18/4 WEEK 1- ACQUISITION OF HIKMAH

The acquisition of Hikmah (wisdom) is a highly valued and sought-after goal in Islam. It's not merely about accumulating knowledge; rather, it's about the deep understanding, discernment, and proper application of knowledge in a way that is pleasing to Allah and beneficial to oneself and others. The Quran explicitly states:

"He gives wisdom [Hikmah] to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding." (Quran 2:269)

This verse highlights that Hikmah is ultimately a divine gift. However, it also implies that one must strive for it, as Allah grants it to those who are deserving and seek it earnestly.

Purification before prayer, is a crucial aspect of Muslim worship. It refers to the act of cleansing oneself from minor (hadas kecil) and major (hadas besar) ritual impurities before performing prayers (solat). The main purpose of this purification is to ensure that one is in a state of purity and cleanliness when facing Allah SWT during prayer.

Types of Purification

There are two main types of purification before prayer:

Wudu (Ablution): This is the purification from minor ritual impurity. It involves washing specific body parts with water in a prescribed order. The body parts that must be washed during wudu are:

Washing the face.

Washing both hands up to the elbows.

Wiping a part of the head.

Washing both feet up to the ankles.

Maintaining the correct sequence (tertib) of these actions.

Ghusl (Ritual Bath): This is the purification from major ritual impurity. Major impurity requires washing the entire body with clean water. Some situations that necessitate ghusl include:

Emission of semen.

Sexual intercourse.

Menstruation (for women).

Post-natal bleeding (nifas, for women after childbirth).

Death (except for martyrs).

Alternative Purification: Tayammum

In certain circumstances, an alternative purification called tayammum is permitted. Tayammum is performed by using clean earth or dust as a substitute for water when water is insufficient, difficult to obtain, or when there's an impediment to using water (such as illness).

Purification before prayer isn't just about physically cleansing the body; it also has a spiritual dimension. It symbolizes one's readiness to face Allah SWT in the best possible state, both outwardly and inwardly. By performing thorough purification, it is hoped that the prayers offered will be more focused (khusyuk) and accepted by Allah SWT.

Alright, usrah for this semester feels like it covered some serious ground, diving deep into prayer, Hajj, fasting, and especially Islamic rulings pertinent to women. It's a fantastic foundation for any Muslimah. When reflecting, I think about how this knowledge has opened my mind in which were there things I were fuzzy on before that are crystal clear now? It change how I see my daily prayers or fasting, making them feel less like a chore and more meaningful? And about the specific rulings for women? I've learned a lot in this usrah. Beyond just knowing, consider how this knowledge has actually changed my actions. Lastly, think about the challenges I might face in applying what I've learned and what my next steps are.

Want to jazz up your usrah sessions and make them even better?

Next, let's get everyone talking! For bigger groups, we could split into smaller discussion circles so everyone feels comfy sharing. Or, how about a "Q&A Hot Seat" where we tackle all those burning questions? It'd be cool to let people share their own experiences too, so we can all learn from each other.

Finally, let's think bigger than just fiqh. Sometimes, we could dive into soul-searching topics, stories from the Prophet's life, or even how Islam relates to today's world. It's a good idea to encourage everyone to set little goals after each session, like trying to pray on time all week. And let's not forget to hang out sometimes outside of usrah – maybe a potluck or a charity event – to really build those friendships. Oh, and totally important: let's ask for feedback regularly so we know what everyone wants more of!
