I used to think that choice was something that was just there, that it never left, like the shell on the back of the tortoise. I also believed that choices were horrible things that could change you into a horrible person. It was just an obstacle in the way of your path to death, just a way of every living souls' life. But now I think that choice is a wonderful thing, a privilege, because when you read The Giver, they can't make choices of their own. Colors aren't even real to everyone except Jonas and the Giver.

I used to think that choices are just things that people come across on the road of life, and that everyone had choices, like being a doctor or a secretary. Now, I think that some are forced to make choices. To follow everyday rules and to go against what they believe in, what they support. When you are at a crossroad in life, you have two different paths to choose, and it's up to you to decide on the better one. The ability to make choices gives us freedom, which gives us more responsibility with that freedom. While choices may be small, like having pizza or a salad for dinner, or large, like what college you go to for your future career, that pizza may just affect your life more than what you may think.

Three new words that I now connect to the topic "choice" are decision, important, and life-changing. Two new questions that I am now wondering that are related to this topic are "Why do some people make the bad decisions that they do?" and "Why don't many people get to choose what they want?" A simile that describes this topic (and maybe how I felt about it) is I was as frustrated and indecisive as a kid who was just told she can only pick one toy in a toy store. I used to think that choice is a given and everyone has the opportunity to choose what they want, but now I think that choice is a privilege that many people don't have.
