In late 1864, Sherman decides to march his army from Atlanta to Savannah, living off the land, and destroying everything along the way that could aid the Confederate army. On the march, Sherman's army causes $100 million of damage "the South would never forget." John Bell Hood moves his forces into Tennessee, and at the Battle of Franklin clashes with Union troops under General George Thomas.

Arriving at Atlanta, the first destination burned during Sherman's march November 15, 1864. After burning Atlanta Sherman went through farmlands and plantations slaughtering cattle and stealing houses for his men to sleep in. Although his march did not include a high death count like other civil war battles, it helped end the war sooner than it would have originally.

In an effort to knock some sense into the southern people an army was formed in order to massacre The South. After Sherman went through Atlanta it left The South bleeding. The South was not prepared in these cities because the most of the confederate Troops were in Tennessee attacking the union’s supply of food and artillery. Sherman however was heading southeast into Savannah, GA. Sherman and his men burned more than 3,000 buildings in the captured part of Atlanta. This destroyed the moral of the south and made production slow down rapidly.
