- After he came back, he was outraged at the racism and injustice of the Jim Crowe South. He became the NAACP's first field officer; he recruited new members, encouraged African Americans to vote, championed school integration, and organised protests.

- His murder had a great impact on the people fighting for civil rights at the time, and sparked protests and movements of their own.
   - It even inspired Nina Simone's song "Mississippi, Goddam."

- His murderer was white supremacist Byron de La Beckwith
   - In 1964, two all-male, all white juries deadlocked and refused to convict him.
   -  In 1989, evidence emerged that jurors had been illegally screened, and de La Beckwith was tried again. He was found guilty and died in prison in 2001. 

- He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
