The Sultans expanded the empire in the name of Islam. Sultans claimed that they were the successors to the prophet Muhammed. Non-muslims had to pay taxes. Each nation had a religious leader who managed affairs. There were Hierarchies that kept each group and power in check. The Ottoman State and people had a tense relationship with the rest of the World. The Ottoman empire had numerous conflicts. Women grew more respected with how many children they had and the older they were.
