What happened with the space race was the Soviet Union launched a satellite called the Sputnik 1 into space, and it was one big race to get the first man into space, so when the u.s. heard about this they also launched and satellite called the Explorer 1. Then the soviet union launched the Luna 2 to the moon. They then sent Yuri Gagarin into orbit around the earth. Then later the u.s. sent Alan Shepard to be the first american man in space. The soviet union and the u.s. followed up with the first women and dogs in space, but the end of the space race was the u.s. landing on the moon first The space race was basically a race between the u.s. and the soviet union to achieve the most in space. I know this because History. com says "In 1959, the Soviet space program took another step forward with the launch of Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the moon, Later that May, President John F. Kennedy made the bold, public claim that the U.S. would land a man on the moon before the end of the decade."

2. Was this an open conflict or crisis: Why and explain.

The space race was a very big well known open conflict between the soviet union and the u.s. This was a open conflict because everyone knew about it and it was very public on the u.s’s fight to achieve more in space then the soviet union. What I mean by this is everyone knew about this and everyone had their own opinion for who was going to achieve more. I know this because History.com says “a new conflict began, this battle pitted the world’s two great powers–the democratic, capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union–against each other. Beginning in the late 1950s, space would become another dramatic arena for this competition, as each side sought to prove the superiority of its technology, its military firepower and–by extension–its political-economic system. Another explanation for this is that the pubic were very aware of the race and what was happening. This connects to the real world because with the better and more rapid technological advancement it would’ve been easier for and side to win.

3. Determine if this affected the social, economic, military and political conflicts during the Cold War.
Or, Summarize the political ideas that have shaped this conflict.

This affected the economic part of the cold war because the soviet union spent a lot of money and other things trying to overcome the u.s. They also spent a lot of money during the cold war and the soviet union’s economy crashed which led to the falling of the soviet union. What I mean by this is the soviet union lost a lot of money during the cold war and the space race and it ended in the falling of the soviet union. I know this because History.com says “For their part, the Soviets made four failed attempts to launch a lunar landing craft between 1969 and 1972, including a spectacular launch-pad explosion in July 1969. From beginning to end, the American public’s attention was captivated by the space race, and the various developments by the Soviet and U.S. space programs were heavily covered in the national media,Soviets, in turn, were pictured as the ultimate villains, with their massive, relentless efforts to surpass America and prove the power of the communist system. Another explanation for this is that the soviet union lost a lot of money and couldn’t bring their empire back. This connects to the real world because the u.s has a lot of money now and they had a lot of money then they weren’t really hurt by the space race.

4. What important vocabulary words did you discover in your research? What do these words mean?

Some important words I found were ballistic and cosmonaut and sputnik. Ballistic means
moving under the force of gravity only. and cosmonaut means a Russian astronaut and sputnik was the first satellite in space.

One human right that was expressed was the right to democracy this human right means that everyone should get a say in what happenes. this is expressed when the soviet union got to put a satellite into space first the u.s. pooled all their ideas together to come up with more ideas to achieve more than the soviets. what I mean by this is the u.s. put their ideas together like a democracy to come up with better ideas.I know this because History. com says “That same year, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a public order creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a federal agency dedicated to space exploration.” Another explanation for this is that the u.s. planned out more ideas all together to accomplish more than the soviets. This connects to the real world because the u.s. is a democracy and everyone has their own ideas and opinions but they come together.
