In this scene, Kate is upset because her father won’t let Bianca marry until Kate is married. Other men think it’s a joke that Kate has ever thought of herself getting married. While people treating her like less than is the opposite of the stated theme, this builds to my statement in the end. We can see how men thought of women back then. They were a man's property, shifted around to their pleasing. Men have complete control over women, and Kate is hated because she says things that men don't want to deal with. This shows that a certain attitude is automatically expected of women. They should be submissive and obedient.

In Petruchio's use of a metaphor, he compares Kate to his "household stuff," or his assets. He is confessing that he shall officially have all of the power over his marriage, his relationship, and most importantly, his wife. He lowers her down to something he owns, which is proof that this is how he sees her. She is as important as his objects. This statement solidifies the claims in the last quote, as well. Petruchio provides an explanation for taming Kate in this scene, which is that she should be able to be controlled by Petruchio.

The excerpt above portrays a portion of a small, argumentative dialogue between Katherine and Petruchio. Here, Petruchio and Kate are beginning the journey to Kate's father's house, and Petruchio is trying to tame Kate. He is successfully wearing Kate out and forcing the most ridiculous actions upon her. He claims that it is seven o'clock, knowing that Kate will disagree and say that it is two o'clock. It was two o'clock, but he does this to test Kate's obedience. He is trying to remind her who is boss. After she does disagree, Petruchio snaps at Kate and doesn't allow to journey to her father's house with him. Kate complies grudgingly, and they do not travel that day. This shows that Petruchio is successfully taming Kate, but he is taming her in a cruel way. The audience can see the absurd actions he presents. This makes them believe that what he is doing is cruel and unfair, furthering the theme that men and women should be equal. It is horrible to be treated unfairly. This contributes to the plot because Kate is finally controlled, showing signs of her "progress" as a married woman.

The above excerpt is a part of Kate's ending monologue, where she is scolding the other women for not being obedient to their husbands. She uses a metaphor, comparing all husbands to lords. She does this to portray their husbands as all powerful over them. This is suspicious, however, because she was so quickly convinced that women should be obedient. Because of this, the audience can conclude that she is faking so that she will not be harmed by Petruchio anymore. She over exaggerates her love for her husband, and she doesn't mean what she is saying. It is almost as if she is badmouthing men because of the sarcasm she uses. In the end, she is not really tamed. Instead, she is quiet so that Petruchio will believe she is tamed. Kate not actually being tamed shows that Shakespeare did not think that women should act a certain way or be tamed. Because of this, the theme of women and men being equal becomes apparent.
