Mole - A clever, sensible and generous animal who is very loyal towards his companions. He is a younger character than the others who slowly gains confidence as the story progresses.

Rat - a kind, relaxed, and well-mannered animal. He becomes a very close friend to the Mole, who he seems to take under his wing. He acts as an "older brother" to the Mole.

Toad - The wealthy owner and occupant of Toad Hall.

The novel takes place in the English countryside, along a riverbank near a forest. Many have thought the river to be the majestic Thames river, although it is not specified. The novel is based in the early 20th century, when King Edward VII ruled the British Empire (1901-1910).

The point of view is told in third person, from an omniscient point of view. The narrator focuses on a different main character each chapter.

Below is the Thames River, thought to be the setting for "The Wind in the Willows".

Kenneth Graham was born in 1859. His mother passed away when he was five years old. His father had a drinking problem, and could not look after the children. He and his siblings were sent to live with their grandmother, who lived along the Thames river. This helped Kenneth develop a lifelong passion for boating. Kenneth attended St. Edwards school in Oxford. Although he had the capability to attend Oxford University, his Uncle refused to finance his studies. Instead, Grahame worked as a clerk at the Bank of England while writing in his spare time. In 1899, Grahame married Elspeth Thompson, and together the couple had one boy named Alastair, who had a number of disabilities. Kenneth would soothe his son to sleep by telling him stories of a toad. This inspired him to write "The Wind In The Willows", which was published in 1908. Because of his disabilities, Grahame's son grew increasingly troubled, and took his own life in 1920. Kenneth was devastated, and wrote very little after this. He passed away in 1932, and was buried with his son.

The first publishers rejected "The Wind in the Willows". It took several attempts for the novel to be published, with the help of President Roosevelt promoting the novel. Even then the narrative received negative reviews from the critics. However, the general public loved it, to the point that many reprints were required.
