Key characters

our key characters in this scene were mainly Paris and Capulet
Paris and caplet are having a conversion about Juliet's plans for her marriage with Paris.
In line 20 capulet says that 'Thursday tell her' showing us that he is ordering Juliet to get married to this man and that she ultimately has no say in what is going to happen to her as its more of an order/request 'tell' rather than it being more of a question like 'ask her'. this shows us quite a lot about the characters in this scene as it shows us that Juliet has things said and ordered by her behind her back without her even realising and that other characters are very dominant, Furthermore in line 23 Capulet asks Paris 'wether he will be ready' showing us that he is only asking paris about his opinion on the matter and cares more about Paris rather than his own daughter.
Another one of the key characters is Paris, who in this scene is very eager to marry Juliet as he says in line 29 'i would that Thursday were tomorrow ' this also shows us that he is naive as to what and who Juliet loves and is still in love with her.
Juliet isn't involved in this scene showing us that everything is arranged

Shakespeare's thoughts

Shakespeare is showing us through Juliet, how women have no control on who they marry ( Forced marriage) and that it is all planned for her. Her parents are preparing her wedding behind her back even though she doesn't love Paris. Also, Shakespeare is showing how young women tend to get married and how it was quite normal. As Juliet was so depressed about Tybalts death, Juliet's father decided that she wouldn't wait a couple of years to get married, instead she would get married in the next few days, " A Thursday let it be." Again this shows how the woman gets no control over what happens in her life and how they get married at ages as young as thirteen! Shakespear is also showing the massive age gap between the girl and boy during that time. He is showing this by having Juliet ( a thirteen year old )being arranged to marry Paris who is around his early twenties. It wasn't strange in those times

the idea of the theme of love is used a lot throughout this scene along with the wedding arrangements but not only that, Capulet was almost forcing love onto Juliet 'are you ready' showing us that its more of a duty than a feeling
