She read books like Lord of the Flies and Huckleberry Finn, where the characters that were another race than white were characterized as dumber or escaped slaves. This helped her lose her early interest in books, and she turned away from them.
Later, at the age of 23, she was a 2x college dropout that was suffering a quarter-life crisis and went to Israel to find her calling in life. Instead, she found the shoes of other people whose stories were different, one worse than the other. This led her to being a writer that didn’t want to change the truth on any of her stories as it would ruin them, and her goal was for them to have a strong influential impact.

She wrote Dear Martin, and the sequel, Dear Justyce, a highly influential story about racial profiling. A kid named Justyce is doing well in school, but has a change overnight due to microaggressions and stereotypes that had been keeping him down. He tries to make a change like Martin Luther King Jr., but gets in trouble and even gets put in handcuffs due to some police brutality. As you can tell, this story focuses on some serious current events.
She also wrote two Black Panther related novels, indicated she works/worked with Marvel Studios(another thing to remember is that Black Panther is a strong and prominent male black character in movies and books that inspired many people)
