      Tom Buchanan seems like one of those guys that knows he’s more fortunate than most people and feels better than them. He thinks everything he does is fine being who he is, an example of this is how he didn’t even support his wife Daisy when she was giving birth to their daughter. Another example is how he has a girlfriend in a different town even though he’s married to Daisy and has a kid with her. 
      I feel like the best colors to describe Tom throughout the first chapter are white, red, and gold. I think those are luxuries colors especially how red-and-white is used in the quote. Red can also be a color of violence, since it is the color of blood. This being said Tom Buchanan is a pretty violent person, when Nick was at Tom and Daisy’s house he says that Tom hurt her finger by accident. Even though he didn’t do it on purpose Tom is still violent because of how big he is.

We were introduced to the main character Nick Carraway and a little of his back story. He lives on West Egg and has a pretty popular and extremely rich neighbor The Great Gatsby, his cousin Daisy lives in West Egg both are in the higher end class. Then we’re introduced to Tom who I don’t particularly like. When Nick arrives at their house for dinner we find out a lot more about Tom, at the dinner he was reading a book with a racist title and he said something about liking it so this implies that he’s a racist. Then he gets a call from his mistress who lives in New York but he’s married to Nick’s cousin Daisy. I personally think that’s one of the most messed up things you can do to anyone but the thing is Daisy knows so I’ll have to wait and see what happens in the future.      East Egg consists of really wealthy people. It is where people who were born into their money live. This is where Tom Buchanan and his wife Daisy Buchanan live. The people who live in East Egg are considered to be arrogant and to have “old money”. A perfect example is Tom. Tom Buchanan perfectly represents East Egg. West Egg on the other hand is still a pretty rich place but not as much as East Egg. People who live in West Egg are considered to have new money and aren’t arrogant. People who represent West Egg are Nick and his neighbor The Great Gatsby since they both live there and have “new money”. The Valley of Ashes is in between both the Eggs and New York City. It is covered in grey ash and is a dumping ground for New York City. There is a big billboard of a pair of eyes and yellow glasses belonging to Doctor TJ Evkleberg. The billboard kind of represents the saying someone is always watching you. Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson and her husband George live there. Lastly Jordan Baker represents New York City since she lives there.

I like to picture the story when I’m reading it or having it read to me and it was easy to get a basic idea of what The Valley of Ashes looks like,added the little detail of the billboard of doctor TJ Ecklberg. I also got introduced to Myrtle Wilson and her husband George and what he does for a living which it still amazes me how Tom is married and has a girlfriend and the same thing with Myrtle I don’t understand how their spouses allow them or is okay with any of this. I feel that Myrtle acts differently when she’s around Tom and especially when there’s other people around, and example of this is how she buys a dog off the street and then later in the chapter it’s pretty obvious that she doesn’t really have any affection for the poor dog. "’It takes two to make an accident.’"
 Jordan makes it seem like she doesn’t have to drive safe and just depend on the other drivers to not get in a car crash. When Nick was telling her that she’s careless when she drives and said that it’s okay because the other drivers aren’t and it takes two to crash. She’s basically saying that she doesn’t have to pay attention to what she’s doing while she’s driving which is really dumb because she can easily crash. She’s just really depending on the other drivers to not crash which makes her sound snobby. I assume she’s in the higher social class since being a famous golf player and just having that mentality while driving really makes it seem like she’s better than other people because of who she is. The setting of the book makes it pretty easy to tell that most of the characters are in the higher social class, Gatsby lives in a huge mansion and is always throwing parties, and Tom lives in East Egg, a place with really nice houses. Although Nick is neighbors with Gatsby he’s not in the same social class as him but he’s still pretty well off so I’d say him and Myrtle can qualify for two social classes.

It seemed like his parties are always fun and never boring. The live orchestra, the cars, and his pools have a part for them being interesting but I mean he lives in a huge mansion. That has to be the biggest reason since he can have more guests, but I don't understand how he has invitations sent out to certain people but most of the people at his parties are usually not invited. I liked that when Nick ran into Gatsby without even noticing and talking with him a little that Gatsby is humble and isn’t anything like Tom. Also why is Gatsby not participating in his party most of the time and will appear every so often. There was an EdPuzzle question about this but it still didn’t make sense to me. Lastly I was left curious about what he and Jordan discussed when he called her to talk privately. It’s pretty clear that Mr. Wolfshein has something to do with the mafia, he fixed the World Series and has human molars as his cufflinks which is kinda showing he’s a man of power. When Nick asked Gatsby how he’s never been caught before he tells him that he’s a smart man. I know that I wouldn’t want to ever mess with him or get him mad because I certainly don’t want my molars to be his new cufflinks. It’s made clear that Gatsby wasn’t intending on letting anyone know about his friendship with Mr. Wolfsheim because when he asks Gatsby if Nick is the guy that’s going to make the deal with them he quickly denies it and brings up another subject. This is pretty bad for the image that he’s trying to project to everyone since it’s nothing like we thought he was. I was surprised because I had the impression that Gatsby was honest about everything he had told Nick but maybe just was embarrassed to talk about his past because of something we don’t know about yet, or maybe he’s just nervous to talk to people, and that’s why he's never present at his own parties, or maybe he even has special needs that we don’t know about, and that’s why his story wasn’t adding up when he was talking to Nick. But then when we realize that Mr. Wolfsheim is a mobster that just cares about getting more money and just being someone powerful. We find this out when Gatsby tells Nick that he’s the one who fixed the World Series and when he’s telling Nick that his cufflinks are human molars. But we find out that Gatsby was partnering up with Wolfsheim and didn’t mention anything about this to Nick. For Gatsby the green light symbolizes hope with Daisy. He’s never given up hope in getting back together with Daisy even though the odds are against him, Daisy is now married and has a kid. Knowing this he never forgot how long it’s been since he’s last seen Daisy. The color green also symbolizes go in this situation for Gatsby. Green being the color for go at a stop light, go can apply for Gatsby here because before he sees Daisy and he’s telling Nick how nervous he is before seeing her, and once he enters Nick's house he’s so nervous he breaks his clock. Something else that is green and can be symbolized in this situation is nature since nature grows and develops over time. This is symbolic because it’s been nearly five years since Gatsby has seen Daisy and now that they’re seeing each other their relationship can develop and possibly grow over time. This whole year was crazy and completely unexpected. Everyone has had to adapt to everything they do. Before we came back to school in person I was really nervous because it’s been so long since I had been at the campus and most importantly since I’ve socialized with the amount of people there would be  during school. Even just with friends, I just thought it was going to be weird and I just didn’t want to make a fool out of myself if I would just stand there and not talk to anyone because I would be nervous but surprisingly I wasn’t nervous which is the same scenario with Gatsby and seeing Daisy. He seemed cool, calm and collected, until it came time to actually start talking to her and seeing her. He completely disappeared when Daisy arrives at Nick’s house. To start off his name isn’t even Jay Gatsby it’s James Gats, he originally tells Nick that he inherited his money from his family and that he attended Oxford because all of his family did previously. We later find out that nine of this is true, his family were poor farmers so there’s really no money to be inherited and he never attended Oxford; he attended the public school St. Olaf for only two weeks. The only thing he tells Nick about how he got his money was supposed to be inherited from Dan Cody but it didn't end up working out after all. His story about serving for WW1 is actually true. A reason I think Gatsby does this is because he’s embarrassed of his past because of the status he has since achieved. He even went all the way to change his name. Also I I think the way Gatsby makes his money is illegal and that’s why he lies about that. I agree more with Gatsby than Nick. Because what Nick is basically saying is that he’s not going to be able to get back with Daisy or that things are going to be the same. I do agree with the fact that things are going to be different than the past if you’re trying to reconnect with a certain person or just go back to doing something you used to do. But in this situation I would be more like Gatsby and just be hopeful that things will always work out in the end. Like Mrs. Watkins always says it’s always nice to look forward to something, it’s kind of the same thing here, it’s always nice to be hopeful and just be positive rather than being negative. For him to remember the last time he talked to her before they had their little reunion at Nick's house for tea which was almost five years ago. This shows that he never did stop thinking about her and never gave up hope of one day getting back together and getting married. He even bought a house close to hers. So yea I’d say Gatsby does love her and a lot. Fist on the other hand did love Gatsby before he went to the military. On the day of her wedding she had received a letter from him and the wedding almost never happened. When they met again I don’t think she was at the point it was before because she had gotten married with Tom and they started a family. But as they start seeing each other more and more she starts to fall in love with him again. Which leaves me confused about her decision at the end of the book. I guess with Myrtle gone Tom will focus on Daisy more but she knows how he is with girls at parties and how he isn’t really loyal to her. I knew there was a movie called The Great Gatsby but I had never seen it. So I just searched it up and YouTube and just looked through the videos but I didn’t go on any of them and I saw a video called “The Great Gatsby Myrtle’s death”. At the time I was like oh ok she dies since I wasn’t really into the book back then, I knew she was Tom’s girlfriend and I was also a little mad and annoyed with myself because this always happens to me. It can either be with a show or a video game campaign, I’ll search up something about whatever it is and in the suggested searches will spoil something or if it’s on YouTube the title or thumbnail will spoil something. The thing is I know I run the risk of something getting spoiled but I can’t resist out of curiosity and I always say it’s not going to happen this time but it always ends up happening. In that chapter it introduces the billboard of Dr. Tj Eckleberg. During that chapter of the EdPuzzle there was a comment on it saying that the billboard resembles the idea that someone is always watching you. This is demonstrated very well in the chapter since there were some witnesses when Myrtle was killed. All they saw was that the car that hit her was a big yellow car and everybody that knows Gatsby knows what car he drives and it happened to be his car that hit Myrtle Wilson. I like that all this happened at The Valley of Ashes where that billboard happens to be. I knew Gatsby was going to be killed by Wilson before we actually read the chapter, but I didn’t do it by accident. At the point where I just thought to just find out what happens in the book I couldn’t resist, I just wanted to know what happened at the end of the book. I was completely shocked by what I found out. I didn’t think Wilson would kill Gatsby for revenge and then end up taking his own life. I thought since he was having problems with Myrtle and they were arguing before she had run out and ultimately getting hit by Gatsby’s car. He had also found out that she was having an affair with another man which was actually Tom. With all that in mind obviously he was going to be upset with losing his wife but I didn’t expect it to lead to him taking his life and Gatsby’s. In the world there are so many people that are like Gatsby when they are in love with someone so much that they can’t get over that certain person. Gatsby hadn’t seen Daisy in almost five years yet he never gave up hope that one day they can possibly be together and “relive the past” nor did he lose his feelings for her. Another way it’s connected to the real world is how Gatsby achieved The American Dream. His parents were dirt poor farmers but Gatsby left them and met Dan Cody and sailed the seas with him for a few years and eventually became insanely rich. Which is what The American Dream is all about, success. But at the time when we were supposed to read this chapter I had just seen the movie Hacksaw Ridge, which is a movie about a soldier named Desmond Doss. The movie takes place during World War 2, Desmond was a really religious man that strictly followed The 10 Commandments and felt that killing another human under any circumstances was wrong. Although he didn’t believe in killing another human he still wanted to serve his country since he believed it wasn’t right that while others were risking their lives for him and he would just be back home with his family. He was initially assigned to be a rifleman but he would soon later become a medic and they were allowed to carry weapons as self defense but he still didn’t want to. As a medic with no weapon you’d think it’ll be hard to survive on the battlefield but as a medic Desmond saved hundreds of his fellow troops. I’m a really positive person and try to not really look into the negative of things but towards the positive most of the time. I think how he does about “reliving the past”. Obviously if you’re reliving the past it’s not going to be exactly the same as it was when you were living in the moment, it’s not like you’re going in a time machine to go to a certain point, there’s gonna be some changes but for the most part it’s the same.
