The watchman is pretty much saying that what Beowulf is saying matches up with his deeds, and they have probably heard of Beowulf, so they know that he is loyal and trustworthy. This is how the Anglo-Saxon culture was, that when they boast, they aren't lying about it. What they boast about is things they have done. It shows that the watchman trusts them because he lets them enter with all of their weapons.

What is he talking about- The Mouned Guard of the Hrothgars shore is allowing Beowulf and his men to go into Denmark, fully armed, and straight to the King as a result of Beowulfs boasts or "resume".


The quote represents the Anglo-Saxon culture by showing they value the honor and word of others, that is why the boasts made by Beowulf were effective. Beowulf also gains respect from this watchman by showing his bravery. He is willing to back up what he is saying.
