SOC 377 Group 1 by Jeffrey Rothstein

Do some research on the internet to find a problem (an economic injustice or a human rights violation) of interest around which you believe a global social movement has formed. Use this space to share resources you have found and ideas for what problem your group might focus on this semester. Be sure to include your name on your post so we can be sure all members of the group contribute.

Hi Group,

Another issue that I personally would enjoy researching is gender equality as a global issue. This would be much easier to find peer-reviewed articles for and is also a relevant issue that I believe our entire class as a whole would enjoy learning more of. I have attached a link to a wonderful article on the global movement of gender equality, too. Thoughts on this as well?

Warm Regards,

Amber Warmelink

I think recently it has gotten a lot of attention, and it should definitely be pretty easy to research different aspects of this movement.

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE). They have helped more than 2.7 MILLION People since 1994!

RAINN also works with lawmakers directly such as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand D-NY and Sen. Chuck Grassley R-IA. Something from each of them regarding the RAINN organization:

RAINN is an outstanding resource on confronting sexual assault. Most recently, we've worked together on the bipartisan Campus Accountability and Safety Act. This bill has provisions to ensure that colleges treat sexual assault cases with the seriousness they deserve. RAINN and I agree that sexual assault is a major criminal offense. It should be treated as a crime wherever it occurs, whether that's in the military or on a college campus. - SEN. CHUCK GRASSLEY, R-IA

I want to thank RAINN for its advocacy on behalf of victims of sexual violence and its dedication to prevention, education and assistance. It is critical that Congress work to protect victims of sexual violence. I will continue to be a leading voice for victims in the Senate, and look forward to continuing to work with RAINN to end violence against women. - SEN.

This organization is globally focused on sexual assault, specifically that of rape. They conducted a report on laws around the globe and show that they are still not sufficient for the protection against rape.

They say "Around the world, rape and sexual abuse are everyday violent occurrences -- affecting close to a billion women and girls over their lifetimes. However, despite the pervasiveness of these crimes, laws are insufficient, inconsistent, not systematically enforced and, sometimes, promote violence. Since Equality Now’s founding in 1992, we have worked with survivors of rape and sexual assault to help them get justice and to push for measures to bring an end to this unacceptable crime. The report looks at how laws around the world are still failing to protect women and girls from sexual violence.

Citation:

The Global Rape Epidemic. (n.d.).

This article discusses women not only as victims but as worldwide activists. Women are active all around the globe so they are able to help create a better system to thwart sexual assault.

The article goes on to mention how this has been successful in ways such as the creation of international treaties, most notable at the 1979 United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women which asked governments to "change discriminatory practices and laws, including those that permit early marriage, bar women from inheriting property or relegate them to a secondary status."

A primary issue, common in most articles I read, is that sexual assault is likely related to women not having equal rights, so organizations are focused on lobbying governments and politicians for equal rights as well as changing social attitudes. Women need to be freed from their belief that they are inferior and also be taught that they, too, have legal rights.

An organization in Uganda called the Centre for Domestic Violence Prevention has volunteers who perform on the streets to create awareness and build support for local laws on violence against women.

The NGO Kivulini in Tanzania uses meetings, drama clubs, traditional music forms like drumming/singing/dancing all to create a discussion between people on violence against women.

"In Guinea, public education efforts bring together local NGOs and imams to explain that Islam does not condone the abuse of women."

Citation: Kimani, M.
