Geothermal energy is heat that comes from inside Earth. It is an alternative energy source that can be used for cooking, bathing, and heating. It can also be converted into electricity. Geothermal energy is available anywhere on Earth’s surface. In some places, such as Iceland, the heat is so close to the surface it can be easily used as an energy source. In other places holes must be drilled down through rocks to reach the heat.

Fossil fuels are made from the remains of dead plants and animals. In stagnant lakes and seas, the dead remains of organisms reach the bottom. Sediments like sand, mud, and stone bury the matter deeper. Over millions of years, the sedimentation increases, resulting in more heat and pressure. This leads to the formation of oil and natural gas. Coal forms from dead trees and plants in swamps. Remains of dead trees and plants sink to the bottom of the swamp. They are covered by layers of sand, clay and other minerals. Heat and pressure change the dead decayed plants into coal.

A real world example would be the oil rigs drilling for oil.
