I have learned through my readings in module 1 that a manager has a lot more internal work then I previously thought. I would have never guessed that they have 4 basic management functions, 4 basic types of organizational resources, 3 types of skills that are important for being successful as a manager, as well as 3 major activities they perform. I also learned how resource use and goal accomplishments related to effectiveness and efficiency are highly important to how you are seen as a manager.

For my artifact I choose this cartoon. I choose it because I feel like it helps represent how managers work. Managers have a lot on their plate that they have to deal with and have to keep it in a balance so that the company succeeds. This cartoon to me shows a manager is able to keep everything running smoothly (like keeping the juggling balls in the air) and not letting the company fall off course (dropping a ball)

I have learned through my reading in module 3 that businesses have many different ways of being run, and how they interact with going out of country. I found it interesting to learn how one categories businesses based on international involvement. I also found it informal how there are different types of manager attitudes toward foreign operations. Which leads me to my artifact.

For my artifact I choose this cartoon. I choose it because I feel it represent the manager attitude Ethnocentric. Which means they believe their business method is superior to the foreign lands practices.

I have learned through my reading in module 4 that there are many different types of planning and how important planning is for a business. You cannot just keep one plan, you must constantly revisit and revise it for the business to keep up with the world today. That's why businesses plan yearly budgets. Not every year is the same, in fact they are usually very different from the last. I also learned about decision making and how to spot problems in the workplace. It's important to find multiple alternative solutions in case your previous solution fails. But one must also make sure what they are doing is legally, morally and formally correct. Lastly I also learned about different environments in the workplace and how there are 3 layers to it. The internal, the operating, and the general environment. Among this I also learned how to do a SWOT analysis.

For my artifact I choose this cartoon. I choose it because I feel it strongly represents chapter 5 with planning. Businesses have to plan and failing to plan, or having a failing plan could lead to the downfall of the company.

I have learned through my reading in module 5 the importance of organization. In the previous module I learned about planning, but planning can only get you so far. You have to be able to execute the plan for it to work, and that is where organization comes into place. In order to achieve the companies goals you must be able to distribute labor efficiently. I also learned how a manager delegates activity in the work place. One of the interesting things I learned about delegation is one of the obstacles which can surprisingly be yourself. I was surprised to hear how in small companies managers can have trouble delegating because they are used to doing the work, thus creating an obstacle they didn't mean to create. Lastly I also learned about organization culture which was something I previously did not know about at all. I learned that there are 4 types of them, out of the four I would say I would prefer the clan culture every time, my second best would be the hierarchy culture.

For my artifact I chose this article about organization cultures as it goes more into depth about how to develop and understand them.

I have learned through my reading in module 6 about the process of hiring people for your company and the training programs for the newly hired employees. I found it interesting how there were 4 types of tests: Aptitude, Achievement, Vocational interest, and Personality.

I also learned about how one influences people. I wouldn't have guessed emotional intelligence was a key factor in being an influence to someone.I also learned about interpersonal communication and found it interesting how its three basic elements were like decoding a messaging. I also got more information about the types of formal organizational communication that I had previously learned in a different class. There was also a lot more grapevines then was previously taught to me so that was a new experience.

Lastly I got to learn more about groups and that they have many different stages depending on the group type. I was also informed the difference between a group and a team.

For my artifact I choose this cartoon. I choose it to represent how the grapevine can control an office sometimes. Instead of going to get information a lot of times employees will just hear it from the grapevine where it can easily be misspoken

I have learned through my reading in module 7 about how different leadership is to management. I learned tht a low task and low relationship was the best for a company which I found interesting before reading as hearing something be low originally sounds bad until I read further on. I discovered many theories on leadership which I was surprised had so many. I think the leadership continuum feels the most accurate to how the manager interacts with his employees. He can either let them in or shut them out.

I also learned a lot about motivation which also has quite a few theories just like leadership. However I think its well known you cannot motivate someone if they don't already have a spark ready to be lit. It has to be there already and just not known for motivation to even possibly begin. I found the theory x and theory y the most interesting of the theories in this chapter.

For my artifact I choose this cartoon. I choose it to represent incentives that some companies use to motivate people. Not all incentives work, sometimes companies have to find better ones and I feel this cartoon represent that. Where carrots were not a good enough incentive but a donut was.

I have learned through my reading in module 8 what exactly the controlling process is. How one measures performance and compares it. I also learned some of the ways to make controlling successful like timely corrective action and multiple organizational goals. I was also informed on how valuable information is, and that there are four primary factors to determine its value.

Lastly I learned about production and deming's flow diagram about product quality. I also learned about operations management and how it has two sub-categories that are periodic and continual. I kind of see the continual as like a fixed item while I see periodic as a variable item. I learned about multiple strategies such as location, product, process, layout, and human resource. There was also a section called the break-even analysis that talked about economic stuff which I could relate back to my economics class that I am currently taking. The break-even point is where most companies want to be so they don't lure in competition, which can happen if you enter the economic profit section.

For my artifact I choose this cartoon. I choose it to represent production and quality control. This cartoon relates to perhaps the old way managers thought of when having a product, they only wanted to get as much of it out there and weren't so focused on the quality or improving the product. As mentioned in the book it was previous thought quality improvement efforts were generally believed to lower productivity. However now a days managers and companies have discovered this is not the case if you can improve a product through all the phases in the Deming flow diagrams.
