In my speaking lessons, I usually apply guided (revising needed knowledge) and free practice (group work and independent work).

About my students, they are university, undergraduate and English majors.

• Age: 19 (second year)

• Level: B1-B2+ (from Intermediate to Upper Intermediate)

Challenges: Sometimes I find it challenging itself to find the materials that can be used to effectively assess their L2 learning, since there is a variety of the levels among my students

The possible solution I usually come up with is to adapt the resources by adding more thought-provoking tasks in my lectures.

Usually I will instruct my students for their peer-evaluating product, while I use my rubrics for my final assessment in their independent practice.

Question 1: 
How do you apply any kinds of practice (controlled practice, guided practice and free practice) in your lesson?Specify the features of your students and the procedure of your teaching/learning activities.

-> Personally speaking, I am a teacher for secondary school where the students' English level is not high. Therefore, I usually use controlled-practice. I will break down the structure elements and give them the meaning of the words for the students to practice. In exercises, I normally give students a handout to fill in the blanks with a certain words in the structure first, and then I would let them reorder the sentences to remind them of the grammar. Finally, when the students know what that structure is, I would let them to guided practice. I provide them with some vocabulary which can be replaced with some words in the structure elements, then the students can write some example based on the given input.

-> This may be a outdated technique, but it is the only one which can help students at low level learn the structure.

What are the challenges you have encountered when you apply any of them?

-> The students at lower level might get stuck with the controlled practice only, some of them cannot remember the vocabular and structure well enough to move to guided practices. Therefore, I can only ask them to remember the structure and easy examples.

What would be the possible solutions to them?

-> The students should remember the vocabular and the structure well so that they can to much more complicated exercises. From fill-in task to sentence writing based on the grammar.

Question 2: 
As to assessment, how do you assess kinds of practice, especially free practice (debates, projects, etc.)

-> In secondary school curriculum, there is project parts at the end of all units, however, hardly can my students say a complete sentence in English, let alone give a presentation. Therefore, I cannot assess students' abilities based on these. I need to break down the projects into easy bullet points and students are required to give single words or phrases into the points. Sentences are suggested but they mainly give words only.
