1) Position Statement - New Zealand should stop registering cars that aren't electric.

2) Summary- Researchers show that electric vehicles are better for the environment. They produce less glasshouse gases and air pollutants than gasoline or diesel vehicles. This includes their output and electrical generation to keep them functioning. On the other hand, despite also having chemically stored energy, electric cars release it electrochemically without any kind of combustion, thanks to lithium-ion batteries. This means that there is no fuel being burned and therefore no air pollution through CO2 happening while driving. Around the world, governments are promoting Electrical vehicles as a key technology to curb oil use and fight climate change. General Motors has said it aims to stop selling new gasoline-powdered cars and light trucks by 2035. (source is You Matter and nytimes.)

3) My action plan was to make a video to educate people about electrical vehicles and their environmental benefits, which then i showed to family and friends.

1) Position Statement - The next NZ government should immediately enact a sugar tax to raise revenue to begin to combat obesity in Aotearoa

2) Summary - Obesity is becoming an increasing issue in NZ. A sugar tax would help to combat this in 2 ways. The first way would be by discouraging people from buying, this would also help with the problem of diabetes. The second way a sugar tax would help is that it would raise revenue to come up with solutions. This would be super good to help combat the issue and many other sugar-related diseases. I believe that by implementing a sugar tax, we would help with so many issues in our communities and it would contribute to a better quality of life for many people.

3) My action plan... I have created a poster and shared it with my community to raise awareness for what this change would mean for them

The Overuse & Misuse of Antibiotics

1) Position Statement -

In order to avoid over-prescription of antibiotics and bacteria becoming resistant, patients should have to see two doctors who agree that antibiotics are needed before a prescription is issued.

2) Summary -

Antibiotics are commonly overused and misused. Doctors will often prescribe antibiotics for minor things that don't need to be treated that way. This gives bacteria resistance to that antibiotic. This is one form of overuse. Another form of overuse occurs on farms. Farmers will feed constantly their animals antibiotics to prevent them get infections. This gives bacteria resistance to to antibiotics and that bacteria could be passed on to humans, which would require different or new antibiotics to treat it. The main form of misuse occurs with patients on antibiotics. They will either not take their antibiotics correctly or dispose of them incorrectly. If antibiotics are disposed into a food source then some bacteria could gain resistance to that antibiotic in multiple people. If more than one doctor was to prescribe antibiotics before someone could have them, this would prevent overuse of antibiotics by not providing them to people who didn't need them.

3) My action plan -

My action plan is to send a letter to the Prime Minister asking him to increase regulations on antibiotics.

1) Position Statement

Vape shops should not be banned near schools. Instead, there needs to be a $75 fine when a student is caught with a vape. This is better for targeting the harm of vapes.

2) Summary

In New Zealand, vaping is only recommended as a way to quit smoking. Youth vaping is becoming increasingly prevalent, with many choosing to vape despite being an R18 product and having never smoked (Vaping Facts, 2022). The latest results from the most recent 2022 ASH Year 10 Snapshot survey found that 10% of the 14 to 15-year-olds reported vaping every day; with higher rates among rangatahi Māori (22%) and Māori girls (25%). Daily vaping among those who have never smoked showed a small but significant increase from 3.1% in 2021 to 4.3% in 2022.

3) My action plan...Letter to Principal introducing money fine for kids vaping at school.

Dear Mrs Ofner,

I think what we need to do to prevent vaping in our school Ms Ofner is if a kid is caught using a vape their parents should get fined the same amount that vape costed, for example $75. The reason this fine is so high is because if kids have money it's from their parents (like in an allowance). In taking that money away when they're caught vaping they can't save for a new vape and it's on the parent to control the money. Another reason why the fine should be a lot is because it's so harmful not just to the kids vaping but to those around them. This is a really important policy to send home the message that vaping is a serious problem at school -do the parents want $75 dollars gone, or their child's voice gone?

Thank you for reading,

Ulucean

1) Position Statement - The NZ government should impose a 10% tax on all processed food to reduce the prevalence of heart disease and gather funds to assist with the cost of helping those already struggling with the disease.

2) Summary - Lack of education and awareness. People who purchase processed foods may consume more sugar, salt, and fat than is advised since they may not be aware of the amount of additives present in the food they are purchasing and consuming. Due to the substantial amounts of added sugar or fat that certain meals contain, they may also have more calories. The reason why people will purchase these types of foods is convenience. A study tracked over 105,000 participant’s eating habits for over five years. From this study researchers discovered that people's risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or other significant cardiovascular event increased by 12% for every 10% increase in the amount of ultra-processed food they consumed.( source www.harvard.health) September 2019

3) My action plan... Schools supplying healthy food options for lunch - If Children were given healthy food at school it would decrease their eating of processed foods- (which is what most family send their kids to school with). The eating of processed foods can increase cardiovascular heart disease risk by 12%. If the school did supply healthy food it would stop kids eating what they bring to school usually- Processed foods. If they stopped eating unhealthy food options like processed foods it would decrease their chance of heart disease.

1) Position Statement -

Nuclear Energy is a high-priority socio-economic problem. It revolves simply around the context of economic prosperity, and technological innovation, in terms of social welfare. Although this seems congruent, the New Zealand environment is fairly unadept to this proposal in terms of environmental beneficiaries. It is in this prospect that New Zealand should continue its legal ban on Nuclear Power production.

2) Summary -

Scientifically, Nuclear Energy production revolves around the process of Nuclear Fission, in which an individual nuclei split to release mass amounts of atomic energy. Nuclear Fusion is the opposite. Famous examples of the production of nuclear energy involve the sun’s internal mechanism, the Chernobyl accident, and Radioisotope Power Systems.

3) My action plan -

I have created a comic relief poster in commemoration of how the continuum of Nuclear Power production in New Zealand would impact the population socially. It is but a rhetoric on the directly opposing reciprocal concerning how the stinky smell of atomic radiation impact the social intiquites of the world. P.S: I just remembered the controlled Nuclear fission reactions harnessed in the power plants, result in Gamma radiation, heat, and various isotopic variants of different relevant elements. Additionally, producing no sound nor smell. No matter though... I shall simply adjust the target audience of my poster for brainless fools who are'nt willing to at first hand acknowledge the molecular integrity of radioactive propositions. Wait... I'm talking about myself.

While vaping reduces toxins compared to cigarettes, flavored e-liquids attract youth, leading to unintended nicotine addiction. The country faces concerns with 33 vaping-related deaths, prompting legal adjustments. In 2020, the government closed advertising loopholes, and in June 2023, a new Act prohibits vape shops within 300m of schools or marae, addressing concerns about accessibility and its impact on young non-smokers. Balancing harm reduction with preventing youth addiction remains a challenge in New Zealand's anti-smoking efforts.

1) Position Statement - Clean drinking water is a human right and EVERY person should have access to safe water

2) Summary - There are several ways humans have contributed to the socio-scientific issue of access to clean water. For example, humans have contributed to pollution of waterways through dumping rubbish, littering, farming runoff and industrial waste just to name a few. This has lead to fewer clean drinking water sources around the world. A solution for this could be to educate people on how much pollution and litter we create in everyday life to try to reduce how much waste we produce. There should also be restrictions and penalties on the amount of pollution companies and farms are allowed to create to help stop ruining water sources, and generate money to help pay for water treatment plants. This could be challenging as it requires a big change, and industries are unwilling to do so if it costs them money. (Please note this is just one way humans are contributing and a potential solution for it, you can include as many as you have researched here).

3) My action plan was to create an educational poster which I then presented to my family, and printed several copies of to put in mailboxes and spread awareness. Plus according to research, more than 40% of total electricity comes from burning coal, so how efficient is it really?

3) My action plan: I will write a letter to the Coalition addressing my concerns and possible solutions with this problem. Dear Christopher Luxon, Winston Peters and David Seymour. I would like to write this letter, to address my concern about Electric cars. For one, they are quite costly compared to gas cars. Two, they take more time to refuel overall, and are a lot more experimental than gas cars, as they are newer than gas. My problem is that I believe the current cons outweigh the pros of electric cars to gas cars currently.

1) Position statement - New gas cars can not be made or purchased in NZ by 2030

2) Summary - I agree with this statement because there has been a significant amount of air pollution in the atmosphere. But there has also been a rise in electric vehicles as over 84,000 have been sold in NZ as of June 2023 so there is hope to help slow down the air pollution and banning gas cars by 2030 would really help this.

3) My action plan... Hi (Insert electric car company). I am writing to you with some advice for how you could improve your sales and potentially help slow down air pollution from gas cars. I think it would be a good choice to begin putting as many resources as you can into working towards improving your EVs are there are still issues with your cars such as short battery life and long charging times. If you work towards making the cars as good as they can be, this may help convince people to purchase your cars with all the features and this may help not only the sales for your company, but also help slow down air pollution as this may make people switch from gas cars to EVs which would really help the environment. I hope this helps you in someway and see this being applied to future car making. From Dylan Sell

1) Position Statement - The next New Zealand government should immediately enact a Sugar Tax to raise revenue to begin to combat obesity in Aotearoa.

2) Summary - Excess sugar will lead to diabetes, cancer, heart diseases and obesity. The number of obese children rose from 11 million in 1975 to 124 million in 2016. Evidence shows that the children of obese parents are usually also obese. In order to prevent more obesity, a sugar tax can be used in order to lower the amount of sugar consumed by people. It was shown in the UK that when a sugar tax was enacted, the manufacturers gradually lowered the amount of sugar in their product and there was a 20% decrease in consumption. In the US, it was shown it could generate a tax revenue of 13 million USD in 2016.

3) Action plan - I will make a poster about the benefits of sugar tax to educate people on the matter.
