1. To Control Flooding. Floods in China have killed thousands of people.

2. Navigation. The 3 Gorges Dam will allow large ships to travel upstream to import food and other supplies from other countries to China.

3. Tourism. Since the 3 Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, it is expected to be popular to tourists coming to China.

4. Power Generation. Now not relying on coal that much and not producing so much greenhouse gasses, it is producing 84.6 billion kilowatts of clean, pure energy.

China will lose a lot of money for inundation of fertile farming land. 100,000 of the acres that will be flooded is 10% of the grain supply and 50% out of that is rice. Because of the building of the 3 Gorges Dam, The land around it is much less fertile causing growing of crops and grains on it 2x more harder for the farmers and also 2x more expensive for the government to fund. There are also 300 types of fish living in the reservoir. 1.3 - 1.9 million of the people were forced to be moved from their homes because of the building of the 3 Gorges Dam and only 87.3% of all these people were peasants and/or not educated. The Chinese Government uses a method called the "lump Sum" method.
