The other characters are the cousins and the coyotes with a yellow bandana. They help us understand that the daughters looks up to her cousins pride and will never let go of it herself. The coyotes with the yellow bandanas are the only people the daughter can rely on to get to safety which shows how hard her situation is

What is the significance of the different colored bandanas? What does this detail help us understand about the daughter’s situation? About the larger context for the poems?

The significance of the different colored bandanas are that those wearing yellow are one of their people, they are the ones who will be able to take them to safety. What this detail helps us understand about the daughter's situation is that she has no one and can only rely on the color she was told to look for.

Both poems start with the idea of running. The first poem starts with someone saying they can run fast and that her endurance is strong. On the second poem it starts with the mother saying that her daughter doesn't know that she knows why she is running and this is important because it creates the idea that the daughter wants to run or move on from something

Each poem contains a brief narrative or story. The daughter’s poem is a hypothetical scenario. The mother’s poem is an experience she had that day. What is the significance of these narratives? What do they help us understand?

The significance of the two narratives is that. They help us understand that people take these types of trips and risks to help them and their family as well.

Why do you think the mother’s perspective comes after the daughter’s perspective?

I believe that the mother´s perspective comes after the daughter´s perspective because it is a way to symbolize the relationship between the daughter and mother. As a mother you are always putting your child above and beyond anything and everything. Mother´s are always making sure their needs are met before theirs. This concept is the same as the poems because the mother is letting the daughter say her story.

How does Garcia present this message or messages - consider the way the poems are organized, stanzas, lines, diction and imagery, POV, narrative?

Garcia presents these poems in a number order. She wants the reader to understand the thinking process as why one would have to leave. Next the mother talks about the life she will live once the daughter has left her side. It connects to the message of how emigration is not easy for anyone involved or related to it.
