This year I was observing boys playing with one another and they would pretend to kick, hit and punch one another. They were also pretending that they had guns and they were shooting each other. I approached the children and asked what they were doing and they explained to me that they were playing "fortinite" in real life. Not only physically but also when playing with blocks and dolls the words that are used and actions are a lot more violent from what we used to see. Both of my brothers were very busy and enjoyed rough and tumble play to begin with but once they were old enough to begin watching and talking about shows/video games that were violent they themselves started becoming more hands on while they were at home playing. I think that when they were playing a little rougher that they were simply acting out what they had watched. I do see how watching violent content unsupervised or without parental support and discussion could be detrimental to development in certain areas.

For example, when it was raining outside, the children were not able to play outside, so the educator turned on some music and some children were dancing while other children were punching and making shooting sounds. The educator had to stop them because of how unsafe and inappropriate this behaviour was. I have also noticed that a lot of times when children are upset they would usually throw things on the ground or kick the table. My class also shares the playground with them. Many times I have had to stop the boys who pick up sticks and start shooting at my kids saying 'I am going to kill you'. I have had conversations with them asking them to put the sticks down and they sometimes refuse saying I am just acting out the 'Legend of Zelda' which is a violent game and not appropriate for children. I have sometimes had to make them sit out and count down to 20. Sometimes they listen and sometimes they swear at me. They sometimes punch and hit each other and many a times I have had to break them up which results in violent outbursts of kicking, hitting and swearing. I have spoken to the teacher asking him to speak to the parents about monitoring their video games but I was told the parents say they are busy with work and cant manage the behaviours so they cave in and let them do what they like. The Youtube video resonated well with me because it clearly states that parents need to monitor screen time and spend time with their kids when they are on their devices or watching television. Alas!
