In no other painting by Leonardo is the depth and mist of the atmosphere ("sfumato") conveyed with such perfection as in the Mona Lisa. This is an aerial perspective, but it would not have long been known only to art connoisseurs, if not for its exceptional history.

The painting was well known among art lovers, although Leonardo left Italy for France in 1516, taking the painting with him. According to Italian sources, it has since been in the collection of King Francis I of France, but it remains unclear when and how it was purchased by him and why Leonardo did not return it to the customer.

Careful analysis of the composition leads to the conclusion that Leonardo did not seek to create an individual portrait. "Mona Lisa" was the realization of the artist's ideas expressed in his treatise on painting. Leonardo's approach to his work has always been scientific. Therefore, the Mona Lisa, which he spent many years creating, has become a beautiful, but at the same time unattainable and insensitive image. It seems coveted and cold at the same time. Despite the fact that the Mona Lisa's gaze is directed at us, a visual barrier has been created between us and her - the handle of a chair that acts as a partition. Such a concept excludes the possibility of intimate dialogue, as, for example, in the portrait of Balthazar Castiglione (exhibited in the Louvre, Paris), painted by Raphael about ten years later.

Another feature of this work - a smile on his face може and maybe its absence. Scientists are still looking for an answer to this question. If you look directly at the lips, the image "smiles", and if you look away a little, the smile "disappears". The artist managed to create the effect of a "shimmering" smile.
